There is zero reason at the moment to spend the extra $100 for hyperthreading for an i7 for gaming - DirectX 12 may change that, but it's been a year now and we've yet to see any appreciable DX12 launches with big gains in that area. Would be a much better idea to get an i5 and a better graphics card at the moment. SSD for operating system is definitely a must.

As has been echoed for several months now, anyone who buys a system right now is going to regret it when a generational leap in graphics architecture is only a month away with Pascal/Polaris (early June availability is almost a certainty at this point).

Geforce GTX 1080 8GB GDDR5X and GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5 (Paper) Launching On 6th May at Nvidia Editors Event - Market Availability by Computex 2016 in June

No performance reviews yet? Per the chart below, I wonder how it will do vs the 980Ti. It has fewer CUDA Cores and smaller bandwidth on the bus.

I just bought a gtx 970 last week and I don't regret it at all! But the psycho analysis of the situation would say I can't regret it because I have to back up my own actions.

With the way I game I'm sure the 970 is going to last me a couple years at minimum and 5+ at max just like my last video card did.

970 was by far the sweet spot of the current generation, and I don't see it not being able to handle 1080p/60 fps on most everything for years to come. But for 1440/4k gaming, the current generation just isn't up to snuff.

Well I shouldn't be drunk right now because I just ordered everything except hard drives.

Gonna grab a couple wd blues for storage but what's the best deal on a quality ssd right now? I'm eyeing something in the 500gb range but would go higher for the right price. Mainly for my games and os.

Dude, dude.

RAID 0 two SSDs for games. Then 1 SSD for boot disk. Then x mag drives for media storage.

It's totes worth it. I get 1.1GB/s read/write on my Samsungs.

In a more serious answer, one of the biggest bottlenecks for PCs is still storage. You can have enough RAM to load an entire game into memory, you can have a processor that can solve Pi to the last digit, you can have a graphics card that can render the Jurassic Park T-Rex scene in 3 picoseconds.

Realistically even though my RAM is larger than a game install, most games are still written in a way that can't optimally use that space - so you have to take the HD hits to load maps/assets/etc. all the time. Even in WoW, my dungeons load noticeably faster than pretty much anyone even though my machine is 4 years old now.

Yeah I run ssds I just don't know why I'd need to raid them i guess.
Well, from a price standpoint if you want 500GB you can buy 3x 250s and run 1 boot disk and 2 raid 0 for your 500gb or whatever. At least when I bought mine $/GB went up significantly past 250 so it solved that problem and ended up being hilariously fast.

Isn't raid 0 mirroring? Would you even see a speed increase with mirroring? I thought raid 1 was where it was at for speed? Personally, I pony up for a m.2 pcie x4 drive and call it a day. Use the WD blues for storage. Otherwise just a plain old sata 3 ssd. I got my Samsung 500gb pro on sale for $250 a few months back.

No 0 is striping, 1 is mirroring

I know a while ago that TRIM was not supported over RAID0. Is this still the case?

Also, I would also just go M.2 PCIe SSD. It is 5x the speed of your fastest SATA3 based SSD.

2,500MB/s max sequential reads:
Amazon.com: Samsung 950 PRO Series - 512GB PCIe NVMe - M.2 Internal SSD (MZ-V5P512BW): Computers Accessories

550MB/s max sequential reads:
Amazon.com: Samsung 850 PRO 256GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-7KE256BW): Computers Accessories
I'm pretty sure most modern RAID controllers support trim operations now.

Also wow have those PCIe SSDs come down in price a lot.
