Ok, my turn to ask on build advice.

Anyone have any recommendations on a good build for $500? Low-budget friend wants to do something stupid and go with a Dell with integrated graphics. And I know for what they want to do (some modern gaming), this is a bad idea. Plus you know, Dell.

I primarily only need a non awful case, cpu, motherboard and ram. I've got the OS and PSU covered and even video card if necessary (it's old, a 580gtx) but it's better than dell's option.

Is this fairly feasible? My googlefu is just failing this morning on a trustworthy CPU and I'm used to my own builds which are closer to $1200-1500

For comparison, the Dell they want which makes me cringe isNew Inspiron Small Desktop | Dell
I did this before, like maybe 6-7 yrs back. I chose one out of their business unit with a core 2 quad and made sure it had a graphics card option for one of the builds (they were all shitty and expensive choices for graphics cards), then I chose one without the graphics card (thinking its the same PC just without the graphics card, and sure enough it was). Of course it came with a shitty 350W PSU, but it was enough for me to plug in a AMD 5850 and it worked perfectly for years.

But yeah im sure you can do better with your own.

Intel Core i5-6600 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor (BX80662I56600) - PCPartPicker$220
MSI H170A PC Mate ATX LGA1151 Motherboard (H170A PC Mate) - PCPartPicker$90
G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2133 Memory (F4-2133C15D-8GVR) - PCPartPicker$35
Samsung 850 EVO-Series 120GB 2.5 Solid State Drive (MZ-75E120B/AM) - PCPartPicker$70
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (WD10EZEX) - PCPartPicker$50
Corsair Graphite Series 230T Black ATX Mid Tower Case (CC-9011036-WW) - PCPartPicker$60 But there is many cases that are good arounf this price range. I have that spec-2 that I got for $60 and it came with 3 nice corsair fans, so it was definitely worth it.

total around $525 with no video card, no PSU, no overclocking, or OS... Also no optical, but thats like $20.

I just did a similar thing for my nephew, his budget was ~400$ with a free video card from me and this is where I landed. cpu/mobo/case/ram/psu/hdd was like $390 with the deals they had when I ordered it all. I'd say seriously consider AMD if you're in that kind of budget range, an FX-4350 is nearly impossible to beat in terms of price/performance. If he can squeeze it to 600$ you could even grab one of the new Polaris cards soon and he could play basically anything at 1080p.

IDK man, I would not fuck around with AMD for gaming. I mean thats like the core of your system. I would rather spend the money there up front and have a solid core, then update with the frills later. If hes got $500 hes almost there with latest gen i5. Especially if hes giving him a PSU, video card and OS. tHe core in that system will last him years, not so sure about an AMD proc from 2012. Its got like 1/2 the performance of the i5. The price/vs performance of that AMD is pretty killer though.

I still have my i5 2500K system from like 2011 and its still going strong. Just needs an updated video card and it can still rock out with the best of them, 5 yrs later.

Looking to get a new monitor and wanted some suggestions. Have been rocking a cheap 1080p Asus but looking something to be decent for gaming. 1440p still the sweet spot? Looking for more budget/value than something really high performance. Would like something in 24-27inch range. Thanks in advance.
Dell S2716DG 2560x1440, 144hz - only downside is it's TN and not IPS but it's $200-250 less than comparable models, and it doesn't look like a kid's toy, super minimal without a bunch of red plastic or shit all over it like the ASUS/ACER. I'm super happy with it.

Yeah fuck TN. I will never buy another TN panel. Its such a huge difference its not even funny. I mean you tilt your head like 10 degrees and shit gets all fucked up.

Save up some more and get a proper IPS.

Proper posture is relative to how many beers or drinks consumed, and the amount of rage the game is generating.

So here is the kids setup. Pretty nice kit for a 12 yr old punk.

I got the thing OC'ed to 4.4ghz. Just did a basic 20% boost from the bios. Temps are cool as fuck. I love those CM 212. I have them in all 3 of my PCs, one of which is over 5 yrs old now. Pretty nice case, that spec-2 corsair. Rounding it all up is a 1080 IPS LG 27" and some mechanical keyboard he wanted.

I still need to get the video card but im waiting. Hes got my old ass 6850 in there right now, but it plays his steam games good enough for now. Hes excited about the new Battlefield.

I wish I had that shit @ 12. All I had for that age was a super Nintendo and a sega w/ sega channel, otherwise spent all day outside(until the street lights came on). Computer didn't come till like 5 year later when they got a bit more common, smaller and cheaper.

Dude when I was 12 I dont even think apple came out with their shit yet, lol. I remember playing space invaders in a local coney island in detroit when I was like 9. And an arcade on Michigan Ave when I was older, zaxxon and shit like that. PCs came into their own (building wise) in the 90s when I was like 20 something.

Well someone had to show him, who better than daddy-o. He sat beside me asking questions, attentive, while we were building the thing.

Maybe, just maybe, the seed was sown.
I tried to show my brother in law how to build a Pc and the whole time he was distracted like a little kid with ADD
