Refresh rate, screen type, response time, resolution. For the most part. It depends on the person. Some think that 120hz is the most important facet where me personally I prefer to have an IPS screen because color shift bothers me. Also if you're going for a 3 monitor setup in the future color shift will be even more evident because the two flanking monitors will be at an angle.

If you're going to do a 3 screen surround setup I'd look at affordable IPS in the 24" to 27" range that are 1080p. That'll be around 5960x1080 in surround which is an assload of pixels so you don't really wanna get into 2560x1440 because it'll be hard/impossible to drive newer games in surround with realistic GPU setups.

Order of importance to me when looking for a monitor:
1) Size (I prefer 27" monitors, and would not game on anything under 24")
2) resolution(1080p/1200p/1440p/1600p)
3) screen type(IPS>TFT)
4) refresh rate(120/144>60)
5) response time(1ms is ideal, but I find 5ms and 8ms perfectly acceptable)

That being said, I don't do any serious FPS gaming, so response time really isn't a big factor to me. Someone that does heavy duty multiplayer FPS gaming may bump response time up a couple spots on the priority list. I'm generally fine with anything 8ms or lower. At that point it makes no difference to me.

All of that combined is why the Korean monitors are so in demand. 27", 1440p IPS panels that can be easily overlocked to usually a minimum refresh rate of 96hz, and often 120hz, with completely adequate 8ms response times, all for about $300 if you buy straight from S Korea via Ebay, or $350-$400 if you buy from a US dealer like Monoprice or Newegg.Newegg.com - 27 QNIX QX2710 2560x1440 QHD PLS Matte Panel Monitor

Man, playing these games at max graphics as smooth as silk is awesome. The card came with Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Assassin's Creed Black Flag, and technically Batman Arkham Origins but the site for the code said it expired.. Bastards.

Loaded up my PS3 controller and it's like playing on my 360 on steroids!

No, the Monoprice ones cannot OC from what I can tell. It looks like that is the tradeoff. No OC but more reliable return policy via Monoprice, or OC + shady return procedure via Ebay/Korea

Amazon / Newegg don't offer some kind of protection if you buy through them ? Not like it matters, me and some friends bought over 10 koreans over the last year or so, none were perfect pixel, only one had 1 dead pixel.

Amazon/Newegg does, but their overclockable 1440p monitors are also up more in the $350+ range

This Monoprice 1440p is one of the first offers I've seen for a 1440p IPS that is under $300 from a good reseller with a good return policy, the only other options at under $300 are via Ebay straight from S Korea

hey guys, i built my new rig and i have a hopefully quick question about inputs.

i have an asrock z87 extreme4 and an evga gtx 570.

i have dvi out from the 570 to my monitor and i wanted to do hdmi out from the asrock to my receiver but when i plug in the hdmi i'm getting no hdmi choice in windows (8.1 64 bit if it matters). it isn't showing it as plugged in in the bios either, and i didn't see any audio or hdmi options in the bios but it's very possible i'm missing something. i updated the chipset and audio drivers.

if i need to use my hdmi (mini) out from my 570 like i was before that's fine but i was hoping to take advantage of the motherboard audio - or would it do that anyway even if i run it through the gpu?

These fucking crypto mining bullshit has really fucked up prices for us consumers big time, from both NVidia and AMD. AMD releases some cards that truly compete with Nvidia at a better price point and they are all snatched up by the crypto fags and their coin mining bullshit and the prices go up $100-$200, negating the competitiveness. In the end we lose.

The audio should come through just fine using the HDMI port from your 570

Just wanted to say thanks to those who helped me with my build a couple pages back. All the parts came in over the weekend, I was able to hook it up by reading both the manuals and Internet, and it magically worked when I pressed the power button. Felt awesome to get it all to work, and it sure runs smooth!
