A lot of it depends on the flow of the game. If you crush all your lanes, you can usually proceed to push down all the towers one by one and then break high ground with nothing but pings. Not a whole lot of communication is necessary in those kinds of games. But if its close game with high amount of activity, then communication is pretty essential.
I need to know if you're going to be there to back be up when they dive. Same thing if I'm planning to dive. If there's multiple high value targets, your team needs to work out which one will be focused in a team fight. Gathering for smoke ganks, rotations, lane switches, the list goes on. Sure youcanwin without doing any of it. Just like youcanwin with bad builds, bad last hitting, or making stupid decisions all game. In any game of DotA there is a big pile of stuff you did right and stuff you did wrong. Good communication is a big ass stone in the right pile. It won't win you every game, but it will certainly tip the scales in close ones.
