I don't understand you people asking everyone to "calm down". This has been like the most civilized riot I've ever seen in my life, no one's flaming Valve or going ape shit, they're all just voicing their opinion in favor of Fnatic and giving quality examples why they feel they shouldn't be DQ'd. If people were spamming Volvo's facebook page and lowering dota 2's score on metacritic then I could see people wanting them to "calm down" but this shit has been great.

Fuck. nevermind that whole angry post, I missed the most important email in that.

Era saying he could play......so then this is on Fnatic just thinking they can do better with Excalibur then it seems? If so, then I see why Valve posted the emails.

Subject: The Internation 4

Hello guys, as you both probably know already I am Era from Fnatic, the reason why I'm writing this mail to the two of you is due to very bothering situations. About 2 and a half weeks ago I was sent home from our Bootcamp in London due to anxiety issues, as I wasn't able to see a doctor nor therapist there. I've now been home and I've seen both a doctor and a therapist. These anxiety attacks has occured before, either a day before or just when I'm about to fly out to a different country. It only got worse with the time, hence the reason why I wasn't in Vegas aswell as this Summit. After two weeks at home without a PC and meetings with professionals regarding the issue, I've been told that my current state is very positive, and that I would be ready to play and participate in Dreamhack, ESL aswell as The International - however they also said that I should just stay home and relax for another week or so, meaning that I wouldn't be able to travel back with the team to the bootcamp after Dreamhack.

With all this said, I had a skype coference with the team 2 days ago when they returned from LA. They said that they don't trust my health state and think it would be a risky and bold move to take me to TI as I can't go back to the bootcamp with them, therefore, they pretty much had me fired of the team (still contract signed) for the rest of the summer, as they think they can do "better" with a Standin. So, my question here is, are they allowed to do that? Espicially knowing that I CAN play at TI 4.

Best regards, Adrian
^That is the email I was talking about.

My favorite is:

Email from Fnatic: "Please keep this confidential"
Valve: "We will keep this confidential"

I guess given the shitstorm they got from the community then they had to show that Era actually wants to play.

You would think if they where going to try and swap excalibur instead of era they would actually play better and not have the hope tinker and meepo win strat

An email like that should have never, never leaked. Valve is a major corporation and would be subject to HIPAA rules and regulations. Granted, Era is not their employee, but he is a "customer". If anyone leaked it, except for Adrian himself, from Valve or Fnatic, this situation could blow up.

I'm not sure if HIPAA would have any jurisdiction since this is an international incident.

Patient's rights are almost universally accepted throughout the developed world, but good luck enforcing it. This is the only way to let people judge and Valve remains squeaky clean, Fnatic took a kick in the balls. I'd like to see their response.

Valve could just argue that not leaking the email could have detrimental consequences to their company, especially if they had Era's consent (which they probably did). Sounds like Fnatic just wanted to shut up Era by saying they would share money with him if he would just go along.

Yeah from the emails it is basically this if anyone wants to TLDNR:

-Fnatic alerts Valve Era may not be able to play due to anxiety and depression
-Valve says ok let us know something solid
-Fnatic wants to replace Era with Xcaliber under the guise of Era's health
-Era (to Valve) says he is fine to play; asks if Fnatic is allowed to muscle him out
-Valve says the invites are for the 5 players not the team and Fnatic has to take Era
-Fnatic mad

Valve made the correct decision, but spilling the beans on confidential emails is very poor judgement.

If Era is on the outside looking in, saying "hey, I am healthy and cleared to play. I WANT TO PLAY"... well then, you have to take the 5 guys that qualified the team for the tournament. That is just common sense. It sure appears that Fnatic feels like they found a better player and they are trying to pull some funny business.

They may not like Era or trust him, but if a doctor says he is good to go and he says the same, well then dance with the girl you brought to the prom.

This might herald the end of invites for The International and we move to a larger tournament format.

There is really no precedent in eSports about handling a tournament of the monetary magnitude of TI. Possibly they should consider not having such a long lag time between qualification and tournament and allow for teams to be in charge of their rosters instead of 5 individuals being the team.

Less invites ? Yeah, maybe. No invites ? Stupid. I think looking at the qualifiers, we can say that there is pretty clean cut between t1 and t2 teams and the odd t1 team going through quals usually butchered everyone else. And even among t1 teams you have like 8 teams you would consider championship contenders.

I could see them doing something like Blizzard does with WCS, where they make a ranking and give points for placing in events throughout the year to make it more transparent, but that's about it and you would still have to account for regional differences, like SEA not having so many big tournaments and so on.
