I don't know if Valve necessarily "codes for the future" because there are tons of things in play. Valve could have had a better vision for where they wanted to take the game and they coded around that vision. Valve also has some of the best game developers out there writing their code. Don't think Valve doesn't make mistakes adding content and features. Remember the whole Diretide issue last year was because they coded themselves into a corner and couldn't resurrect Diretide in the modern codebase.

Well system requirements won't impede future growth, since the longer it goes, the easier it is to reach system requirements that don't change over time. In 2years, a "4year old" computer will be only 2years old from now, which means it'd run it np, and so on. As long as they don't massively overhaul the engine and add more shit to it that bog it down, people will simply have better computers over time to run it. It is an issue though to a certain extent, which is why if the game released 2-3years sooner if Icefrog didn't go through the HoN shit, it would have had lower specs and would have competed with LoL right away which would have been more favorable. Could argue they wouldn't have the same steam support that came from TF2 experience over the year though, so that's something, and they might not have seen value in dota until lol grew, which also makes a lot of sense.

Anyway I'm fine with LoL being LoL and having bigger numbers and shit, Dota2 is doing just fine and growing constantly so there's room for both and that's the most important thing. On the client and stuff though, LoL is definitely fucking shit. It does have things now though that dota doesn't have yet, like instant replay built in the spec mode, they're working on it for dota but it's not there yet. On the other hand it took them several years to even have a spectator mode at all, the first tournaments looked so fucking budgets it was unreal for a company that was making so much money. Kinda like Hearthstone tournaments. They'd probably need to rework the launcher entirely on LoL to get more innovations in, they might even be working on it already. They're redoing the map and might have been working on the launcher and client in parallel to release some sort of massive LoL 2.0 rework, the game has aged quite a bit after all.

I'm pretty sure they announced engine change for LoL once already and that kinda vanished. They seem to develop features at glacial pace, how long did Dominion take from the announcement to full release ? And it was still worse than the normal map.

I also believe Dota 2 attracts older audience, which has more money to spend, which means advertising through this game might be much more valuable and it's packed with Steam, so the rest of the gaming world can easily run promotions like that. Pro teams sell skins and sets, overall the game is trying to make a lot more people happy.

Except here, LoL is the clone and Dota2 isn't the total shit competition that has been MMOs since it released.

If you mean the wow comparison, dota is EQ, lol is wow, hon is EQ2 and dota2 is what vanguard could have been, I'd say. And to this day, everyone copies wow, just like everyone copies lol and not dota. If you look at all the modern mobas trying to ride the big bucks wave, they're not copying shit from dota, they're all trying to get the sweet lol cake, just like mmos don't copy EQ anymore.

We're just lucky dota2 was done by a good company, unlike VG.

How do you even rip off dota2 ? The community is absolutely anal about the mechanics and all the bugs/features that make the game. Then you have the workshop and tournaments, which are features no other company can offer, at least not on this scale. Replays. Steam Market. That's like ripping of Broodwar, you simply can't match the depth while attracting new audience, at least not in a reasonable timeframe.

Well obviously you don't copy the game 1:1 but there's a lot of concepts that are gone in lol and could work fine, such as stacking, pulling, denying, summon based heroes/multiple units heroes, TP scrolls, courier, buybacks, tower invuln and a lot of items like sheep, bkb, orchid, force staff, blink dagger and so on. Some games have taken one or two of these but most completely ignore these because lol didn't copy them, while they can be very interesting mechanics that don't necessarily rely on obscure shit like "mkb ministun is magic so it doesn't go through bkb but basher stun is physical so it does" and so on. New games iterate on LoL, not on Dota. Rightfully so I guess, from an investor/manager point of view, since lol has more players than dota so might as well copy the more successful one.

DotA 2 has a lot going for it compared to League. It The platform is much, much better, it's supported by Valve, its available on steam, and the core gameplay has been iterated so much that nothing else can match its depth. It also has a trusted and anonymous lead making all of the balancing decisions (I've honestly never seen another that has regular balance updates people not only don't complain about, but treat like its friggin Christmas), the biggest tournament in e-sports, amazing graphics, seasonal events, is fully free to play, and will soon have custom game support and even more "fun modes" for the main game.

League has a first mover advantage and causal friendliness, but I don't know if that will be enough to maintain a lead indefinitely. Things like a 10 million dollar video game tournament turns heads. And when people look, its hard to imagine they won't like what they see.

I guess I need to spend what's left of my steam bucks on some compendium points. The weather effects sound pretty cool.
