I feel really bad for all you poor fucks that tried to start melee only builds on your first run lol. Good christ some of these fights were never actually meant to be beaten that way with the amount of poise and attack spam some stuff has. There are so many side dungeons where the "boss" is just 2-4 of the same boss you've already done, crammed in to a tiny brick box.

Good luck every trying to swing your great hammer against some of this shit lol.
Never casted once first play through... was fairly smooth. Git gud.

I've gotten three runes so far without using ashe of war outside of applying it for scaling purposes. Mostly melee with the holy bolt as supplemental range.

Why? It's like playing a monk in EQ while refusing to use FD

I've managed to do pretty okay melee only, esp with all the deficits I put on myself with playing blind. I didn't have any great runes until a couple days ago because i'm dumb, and i've also been running around with hobo gear because it looked cool; things like the cloth hood, with fire monk gloves, some peasant shirt that is the closest thing to a yukata, and I think I have blaiids pants. Was running around with a uchigatana 2h, but recently swapped to power stancing uchi and serpent.. It was pretty annoying not having a decent stagger outside of bloody slash; few fights that were won via kite+bloody slash.. Definitely died a lot and wasted a ton of time doing the same fight expecting different results.. but hey it pretty gratifying when you get your dancedance on and actually win. Unfortunately there is more of me looking back and being impressed that my dumb ass actually was able to do some of the shit I did.. havent used any summons either, honestly don't even know how to upgrade them yet. It took me awhile in the beginning to upgrade my weapon even because I never found the anvil nor did I know how to get back to the roundtable since it was at the bottom left of the map and I didn't see it for awhile.. at least til Godrick, started upgrading my weapon around clearing to Godrick.

Currently making my way up the haligtree or w/e, been told this fight is gonna be hell; so probably will be my entire night lol. So yeah, thats what 100 or so hours puts me.

Zero summons or ashes aside from using one for a frost proc, no npcs or anything, definitely banged my head against a few walls but Im level 92 and at the giant mountaintops.

Still having a blast but wish I knew what the hell I need to do for some of these quests, such vague descriptions and it makes me want to look stuff up but I also dont want any spoilers so IDK.

There are a few quests where you need to use summons. Guess you're S.O.L. on those.

You guys are so weird. Ashes and Summons were both put into the game as tools for you to utilize. There are SOOO many different spirits and ashes that you can tailor to your own playstyle.

I guess I can kind of understand someone wanting to beat the game "by themselves" so not using summons... but not using ashes of war? What? Or are you just grandstanding about not using ashes while you use a weapon that has it's own special and literally can't use ashes?

Used the regular straight sword all the way through, no special. I was going sword/board so relied on guard counters a lot. Was just being lazy and didn't try any ashes I might've liked. I did use summons though, but not mimic tear. Mostly wolves / skelly bros / mino archer

Wat? The whole thing is based on 'wrongwarps' and other glitches that put your character in a place you shouldn't be when you log out and back in. One of the first things he does is glitch his way from the portal to Crumbling Farum Azula which is segregated from the rest of the zone into the actual starting spot you don't normally get to until after the fire giant. He glitches his way into the godskin noble fight so that it doesn't fight back. He glitches into the Godfrey fight so he can skip it entirely. Etc. I guess I just don't "get" speedrunning, because doing it like that doesn't seem like any kind of accomplishment at all to me.

There's probably other things they could do to replicate Hoarfrost's damage, but the biggest benefit is the ice goes around corners, and over and sometimes even through obstacles. I think there'd be a ton of runs ruined by the godskin duo if they actually had to fight without a gazebo between them and the bosses.

Yeah I don't get it either. There's nothing interesting about watching a video where someone just warps past 98% of a game. Like "who can fall through the floor at the beginning of Mario 64 and drop into Bowser's room fastest" isn't an interesting speedrun to me.

I'd much rather see people actually playing the game and using whatever skills/tricks to get through it as quick as possible while actually defeating all of the required bosses. I'm guessing one of these pros on twitch could probably pull it off in sub ten hours. That's the race I'd be a lot more interested in checking out, but instead they're all doing "who can glitchwarp to the end faster" "runs"

I get it, but I just like to have my initial playthrough solo melee, I honestly would love to go without a shield too but I'm just not that good yet.

I am already planning a second play through with using summons ashes and all of the above..... To me, I like starting as level one and just working my way up as a melee character. It's sort of my thing.

Honestly the summon bit stimmed from I thought it was part of arcane mage shit, so I just didn't bother. My limited experience with soulbourne, I just thought it was slapping things with sticks was the priority play. So yeah, comes more from my own dumbassery and lack of reading. Someone broke it down for me later, and so i've just stayed the path.. they also give me shit for not even using a shield or bow. I ran into the jelly fish the other day, but I hadn't found the card to be able to summon one.. actually when I ran up, I killed it and my friend started yelling at me... but I guess it respawns lol so w/e didnt matter.. I have it marked though.

As far as Ashes, Bloody Slash has been phenomenal for me; so I hadn't bothered trying anything else other than a few physical that were usable on it. Bloody Slash gives me a little bit of range, and a stagger for most things.. though not the most reliable combo starter. I haven't had to use it too much now that i'm powerstancing two katanas and swapped to keen, I might use it if I feel they're out of melee range.. but am missing all the bloody explosions, so might go back to it as a focus in my moveset rather than L1/Jumpatks.

I’ve been wondering how some of you got finished so quickly. I’m canvassing each area as completely as I can, and I couldn’t figure out how you guys were doing it so fast!

If you’re not finding 3-4 ruins, 3-4 catacombs, 2-4 cave dungeons, and 1-3 mine tunnels, per region, IN ADDITION to open world stuff, you’re probably doing it wrong.

Probably about 80% of the stuff I missed was in Limgrave and Caelid, aka the earliest places I went through, so chances are I didn't get thorough until Liurnia onward. I think for the most part I was just trying to stay alive at the beginning, and was so absorbed with beating Castle Morne that I didn't check out any of the areas around it (which have a bunch of other things to do).

I used the quit-out screen as basically an FD in this game. One of the reasons I was able to get through it fairly quickly was because I sometimes would outrun mobs and then quit out at a boss door or whatnot to FD them off, didn't actually fight my way through a lot of places unless I needed exp. Exception being the crypts, because the crypt enemies tended to be so wildly obnoxious that I needed to go through those places slowly and pick them all off just so I could explore the area freely without getting ganked by imps and giant cat-statues.

I also went melee-only for the entirety of my initial beating of the game, don't think I ever cast a spell outside of throwing a fireball to see what it looked like. I never used any super-heavy weapons besides the Golden Halberd (if it counts). The colossal swords were just way too slow to even try using. My weapon of choice in Bloodborne was the Blades of Mercy so that kind of speed is what I usually look for.

My build is a mess (started confessor and have mostly put points into dex with some vigor/endurance and a few here and there in str and faith). Around level 42 now.
I’ve been using the uchigatana +7 for a while. What would be the next logical weapon upgrade to go hunt down? I just came across the night Calvary flail but haven’t tried it yet.

I did the trio cystalist fucks with melee at lvl 40ish, no summon no ashes of war. Just a mace and a parry. After doing godskin apostle as melee and twin gargoyles at level 60 I felt no shame going full cheese with blasphemous blade. Game is really punishing for melee especially with how poise and super armor work in this one. Part of me feels sad because I felt with the full melee no summons I was artificially increasing the play time of the game. Alas I am weak. Plus all my friends were ahead of me playing faggy int builds.

O just wait till the first round of tweaks..

Pretty sure Moonveil, the fire and magic sword, and the blasphemous blade will all be re-balanced.(and very badly nuked into the ground) Along with all the spells. It's happened every game release so far..
