Offline here too. I don’t like the bloodstain spam everywhere and the constant threat of invasion ruins my fun. Especially with ER being open world I don’t want to be afraid to go explore.

Definitely offline, I generally mess around with the PVP stuff once I've gotten my single player fix, way too much fun experiencing the entire game solo -but PVP can be fun for different reasons once the story has been completed.

I bounce between offline and online. Online for the variety, offline for enjoying the game. I find dark souls pvp to be a joke and getting help with a boss is basically cheating, but it can break up the repetitive nature of dark souls games of memorizing movesets and terrain.

Do any of you play these offline for your first play through? I’ve never made it more than an hour into these before the constant phantoms and bloodstain/message spam gets to me. It brings me out of the experience.

Yeah, I usually go offline my first run at these games. Eventually I end up going online when there's a tough boss I need help with. Every Fromsoft game (except Demon's) has 1-3 fights that I always end up needing help with. It takes a lot to get me to cave on that, like the worst of the worst bosses: Orphan, the two tigers in the snow in Souls 2, etc. Demon's is by far the easiest for me so I don't need help anywhere there, though I think I might have summoned for Flamelurker the first time out just to get past it.

If we ever get a Bloodborne Remastered, my big goal for it is to get through the game without any summons and actually defeat Orphan myself for the first time ever. Also doing a Strength build for the first time, so I hope Strength builds don't suck against Orphan.

If by 'first playthrough' you mean 100% of the time I've played every From Soft game, then yes, absolutely. Phantoms are an irritating distraction, messages are ugly ass graffiti and 95% of them are trolling anyway, summons are for people who need game journalist difficulty, and I don't give a single fuck about PVP.

This. Getting invaded randomly is more annoying than anything else. I wish enemies also attacked invaders, because invaders being able to just hang out around a bunch of tough enemies or ambush you when you're already fighting is some cheap troll shit and it seems like that's what happens most of the time.

I like the bloodstains and trolly messages. Makes it feel like home.

There are a couple of bosses in souls games that were designed around having more than one player. They are certainly solo-able, in most cases, but the design intent (and abundant NPC phantom options) make it clear they were meant to be multi-player experiences. In most cases, these are confined to DLC/optional fights. And some fights are just plain fun to do multi-player, as are certain zone clears. That said, I am not a fan of the PvP in these games and the griefing it seems to center on, so I almost always go offline mode for at least the first run. I don't think I will turn down co-op on some of the bosses in DS2 and DS3 when I replay them again, though.

I think the 5 or so times I tried to get a coop out of curiosity in any DS game they all died almost immediately.

from my experience it's bimodally distributed in terms of lethality.

In other words, you either get some poor son of a bitch who is more clueless than a turtle on top of a fence post or you get some fashion souls monster who just wombo-combos the boss in ways you can't even begin to understand.

Which bosses?

From what I recall, most bosses either have fairly single-threaded attacks or multi-attacks that, if split among multiple players, are trivial (ex: ornstein/smough).

DS2-
Sinh the poison dragon
Rape triplets in the optional area
Burnt Ivory King
Fume Knight (arguably solo-able but a major PITA unless a specific build)

DS3-
Friede
Demon twins
(kind of) Darkeater Midir
Arguably the Storm King from the base game if you are not a build that can solo him.

Explain how it centers on griefing, if you would
Building tweaked out builds that would never exist in PvE, stat and gear wise. Chucking acid flasks to nuke gear without actually trying to win, constant framerate tricks for easy backstabs are among the more memorable ones. Mostly, I just don't feel like doing a long clear just so some asshole can come in and dump a pile of corrosion flasks on me and trash all my gear so I have to spend an hour grinding bullshit just to repair on top of the re-clearing.

I solo every Souls game my first time through. Any future runs, I may summon people just for the hell of it.

I thought I read somewhere that solo players have to "opt-in" to being invaded.....if thats really the case I'll probably play online just to see the messages and random ghosts of people dying around me, but havent decided for sure yet.

Ya corrosion flask is a good point lol, suspect it was intended for this use tho.

I'll be opting in for solo invades because I cannot miss the fresh launch experience in full.

Infinite time after to replay it on ezmode.
