I agree, I think Haligtree was worse in terms of the trash mobs and also it was pretty confusing my first time through. Though I did get lost in CFA a bit too, there were a few spots that really looked like you could make a jump but I died almost every one I attenpted.
Once I realized I needed to head north it was a lot easier to locate the right route.
The only bosses I had trouble with in FA was the dude on the horse, and the elden beast. The first dragon was a two shot, all the rest were one shots. I definitely felt Haligtree was more difficult overall.
The way I see it, Haligtree (and Consecrated Snowfield) is a DLC that we got at launch. It has the same difficulty ramp-up from the base game that the DLCs had in earlier Soulsborne games.
I'm guessing the actual DLC will probably be more like Ringed City, the next tier up in difficulty from the other series DLCs. Going by previous games, if they're doing two DLCs, the second one will be that Ringed City tier and the first will probably be comparable to Haligtree/Malenia. Especially if it's Miquella like I think it'll be. I'm thinking first DLC is Miquella and second is Marika.

Marika is gone in every iteration of the ending; I do not think we will be seeing her as a living character in any DLC unless we travel into the past a la Dark Souls 1.

I would suspect there is a chance that they might pull a DS2 Scholar of the Sin and alter the final fight to have Marika in it in place of the Elden Beast (which is what I think they may have wanted but ran out of time). And again DS2 had the time travel to the Giant Wars bits, as well. I figure any DLC is far more likely to be underground areas or flying continent areas historically connected to CFA.

Now that we are the Elden Lord, I would like a DLC that delves into ages past and if there were different Elden Rings. A DLC that deals mostly with the Outer Gods would also be great.
So update on my playing:
In my main play I one shot the Fire Giant (he really did not like the powered up DMGS) and cleaned out most of the Giants mountains. Working on finishing up some quests and that area before working towards Haligtree. Might do the sewers detour, not sure. Depends on if I fucked up getting the gold needle or not, because I dont want to be locked into that ending. Clould of Flies got nerfed to the point where its useless on anything other than some NPC Phantoms, but no big deal since MLGS buff more than makes up for that. Also been pumping nothing but INT since I main DMGS and am not interested in much else atm, so part timing as a wizard has been fun for certain fights. Casting speed on Comet is fucking insane right now.
On my coop with the wife, the ganking continues, but we are doing the Darkmoon quest line so we killed Rahdan. One shotted him with me as main, but wife took several tries because the ICBM Bow kept ganking her early LOL. Fight is actually fun coop (no horse makes it more challenging in a lot of ways), but man does rot breath wreck him. But upside is now I have the Rahdan armor and my poise is really high, so the usual twink dual weilding end game weapon gank is not working so hot on me since I can trade hits while the wife burns them down. Completely coincidentally, the amount of gankers has gone down since we got to this point, so my advice about bird farming 20 levels to reduce the gank factor still stands for people who want to coop. The Gankers dont want to play, they just want to alpha strike grief.
Loretta was ridiculously easy. I basically stood next to her and just beat on her and just rolled around a bit. I don’t even really know what attacks she had.
Forgot about Godskin duo. I think they did take 4 or 5 tries.
Godskin Duo is weak to sleep. You can put them both on nap time and then pick one to beat on. They take a moment to get back up so you get some free shots in.
If you don't have the sleep pots or arrows to work with, you can use the Sword of St Trina from Caelid. It just takes a few slashes.
It sounds like cheese, but fuck that fight...seriously.

I read about that after I beat the game. Sleep isn’t really something I tried at all in my first play through. There’s a torch that does a sleep spray, I’m guessing it would be perfect for that fight.

I don't think the DLC will involve any of the demigods because, well...
Marika and Radagon are the same person and you killed them, so they're gone.
Godfrey, Godrick, Rykar, Radahn, Morgott, Mohg, and Malenia are all dead by your hand.
Rennala is a vegetable.
Godwyn's soul was killed during the Night of the Black Knives. As part of Fia's questline, you repair it, but it does not go back into his body; it accompanies you as a Mending Rune. His story is most likely finished.
Ranni's story is finished, so the DLC won't involve her.
Miquella is probably dead. His plan was to become an empyrean free of the influence of the outer gods, but he's missing a very important artifact: his needle. (He left it with Malenia to allow her to resist the influence of the Goddess of Rot.) I think it's possible that his extended arm may serve as the warp point for a future DLC, but he looks dead to me and I think his story is concluded. My theory is that the Formless Mother kills him to stop his ambitions.

I think it's most likely that the DLCs we get will either be related to the outer gods (the Formless Mother seems the most likely), or will take us to regions outside the Lands Between (Numen seems like a particularly strong candidate).

I think we'll see Miquella, simply because the arm felt like such a tease.
Most likely the DLC will go in the directions you laid out though. What makes the most sense for an ER DLC is to just add a great big new area, the size of one of the five regions in the base game.
