Half my PSN friends list seems to be playing Oblivion Remastered today...

After playing quite a bit of Oblivion with friends back when it was initially released, I played all the way through Arena and Daggerfall and loved them, like LOVED them. Almost noped out on them entirely because of the antiquated visuals (this was like ten years ago) and I'm so glad I gave them a shot.

Never got beyond that though and I like to play things in order. Really wishing I'd continued to Morrowind, cause if so I'd jump on Oblivion right now.

Looks like this got a really significant graphical revamp, much more work went into this than your average HD sprucing-up port.

I guess I need to make some room on my calendar to finally run Morrowind. Any mod recommendations?

I got poisoned by a random bandit then I finally remembered that the old game never showed you that you had a poison effect on you. Also that poison effects can DRAIN STRENGTH and other annoying bullshit but you have to cure them with a cure disease potion (sometimes) rather than an antidote. It also just doesn't go away. You can have -10 Strength for a hundred hours without realizing it.

Truly they don't make em like they used to! It's bizarre how refreshing this is.

Look at the video I linked above. Top comment has the mod list.

IMO the relative isolation is more immersive. I couldn't possibly give a shit about the 10,000 other players lagging me with MTX armor while we all ignore each other doing the same NPC interactions in parallel.

Nah play at your own pace and not needed 50 people to fight over 10 pieces of loot has its own allure. Fuck mmorpgs.

This is something to watch out for when starting a new character, and you can tell that Virtuous Studio is from Singapore and has no idea what the hell any of this Western California gender shit is about:
THIS IS why the game characters call you the wrong gender.
In the original game when you choose to be male or female your STATS changed. (Stuff like men may get more STR and END while women might have had more Speed and Agi)

So obviously since the game needed to be made woke they SORT OF did away with that. Nolonger gender changes anything but instead the ORIGIN you choose has those differences of what you had before.

Well the thing is if you choose the FIRST origin the game thinks you are male and if you choose the SECOND one it thinks you are female. So it treats your gender depending on the origin you choose.

ORIGIN = Your gender choice for how the game treats your character.
That is exactly what i am saying.

They tried to separate gender and stats with bodytype and origins.

If you take the FIRST origin then you get male stats and second origin gives you female stats.

The thing is when NPCs talk to you weather they refer to you as male or female is determined by the ORIGIN choice not your Body Type. Meaning if you take body type 2 (male) and origin 1 (Female stats). Then all the NPCs will refer to you as if you are female.

They fcked up trying to separate them.
Thats why my female archer has a male voice when getting hit! This is what comes with it... F'n stupidity.
Just tested it, went back to the save before leaving the sewers, changed the heritage, ran to the next imp to the right, and boom, getting hit, female voice.

Now I can restart all over again.

I hate these modern times. These people are brainless and ruining everything with their craziness. Now the heritage, where your from, is your female or male voice, BECAUSE YOU CANT NAME IT SIMPLY "FEMALE" OR "MALE"!!

I dont know if I should laugh or break down in tears. wtf

So in other words, your Imperial will have the voice of a chick because he was born on the wrong side of Cyrodiil.

I’ve always hated scaling enemies. I like the world to feel dangerous and it never does when you know everything you encounter is curated to your power level. I’m always chasing that moment when you first open the big doors at the back of Permafrost and discover Ice Giants are in this goblin ruin.
That reminds me of when I played Skyrim because whatever mods I had wound up with me facing some high level lightning dragon at the beginning of the game with barely any gear or stats. I was dodging around looking for cover behind every rock or tree until I could eventually kill the thing.

Same thing with an Oblivion mod on my potato PC when I was young where I went into the mountains and an Ice Giant rolled me.

One of the best parts of Morrowind was how you could go into some cave, tomb, or ruin on the side of the road and wind up facing a nest of vampires, high level daedra, or who knows what else that could kill you in seconds. Otherwise, the world feels sterile and bland.

Scaling is horseshit design, but if you're going to use it at least make it bounded scaling. Ex: if you have an enemy that has a typical level equivalent of 10, maybe it scales up to 20 max, and in proportion to player leveling with a ratio below 1:1. Like for every 5 player levels beyond 10 it gains 1 level, up to 20 max.

RPG type games are all about a feeling of power progression. Most scaling systems completely neuter it, if not outright invert it at times. If you can't revisit the goblin town you had trouble with at level 5 when you're level 80 and completely obliterate it within 2.3 seconds, then what the fuck are we even doing?
That was the real trouble with vanilla Oblivion, it actually punished you at a certain point for leveling, so revisiting that basic goblin cave from the very beginning will have you facing off against these unholy abomination warlords that, according to the reported scaling of 30xlevel, minimum 540, could have more hit points than some Skyrim dragons if you were higher level.

Pick your flavor. I think I did one of the shorter lists but skipped over any gameplay mods because I wanted to try out the game as originally designed

I'm already seeing mods over at Nexus that take away the ridiculous high end gear from common bandits and that make leveled quest items scale with you (which is far better than the other mod that just gives you the L30 reward even if you're L5) so apparently they learned exactly nothing from the last 20ish years' worth of criticism about the game's systems.

Oblivions leveling scaling is not just one thing.
Leveling scaling alone. pros/cons. some say they prefer it not at all. Skyrim, of course "fixed" it by gating scaling. wolves 1-10. bandits 1-20, etc. but dragonpriests/generals keep up with you.
if it was JUST level scaling, it would be manageable though.

The problem is, your combat stats are capped.
Every time you level up, speechcraft, enemies grow stronger.
you hit 100 str, and 100 blades, well thats it. your offense stops growing. and.. enemies keep leveling up. and while fortifying over 100 does scale the stats. it does not do so for weapon damage iirc.
unlike in both morrowind/skyrim.

And then of course how busted attribute gains were. where you had to micromanage your skillups to ensure you got +5/+5/+5 options every time, and didn't waste any +2 or +1's.
which then could also potentially bust your character.

The new system is simplified. +12, put where you like. but I do LIKE the idea of skills determining how you gained base attributes. I would have let it bank attribute skillups. like, if you got +3, +4, +3, +3. those extra +3 would be banked, and kept for later levelups.

Balanced NPC Cap has already been ported over, and Ascension is complete as well and is just waiting for the mod author to create the page for it and upload. Those two mods combined with the one that fixes leveled quest rewards should be enough to make the game playable.

They learned that modders will fix it so they can sell copies without putting in the effort.
Yeah, that's pretty much the only thing Bethesda has ever learned.

I never got around to playing a mage archetype in any of the ES games but my word the custom spell crafting is wild, i just assumed scaling with spells would be fucking awkward but this shit is stupidly OP

Summons are really strong too. I am thinking I will just walk around with a sword and magic. Hopped up on custom potions and custom spells.

And yet if this is selling hundreds of millions of copies then maybe the "criticism about the game's systems" is actually just a loud minority of whiny bs that most people don't care about?

It's well documented that the vast majority of people who buy games never come close to finishing them, or in the case of something like Oblivion, get high enough level to see bandits using daedric armor and weapons push their shit in at every encounter. It's still terrible design regardless.
