I'm just looking forward to the release version where you can play solo offline. No real interest in multiplayer at this stage, wasn't needed back in my day, but might be ok after spending some more time with it.
The solo play is already in beta.

Yeah but atm it's only solo on the servers as far as I know. Supposedly they will release an offline playable universe as well but you won't get system updates and such if you stay offline (or am I thinking of Star Citizen...I know one of them mentioned it).

Yeah there will be a solo offline in release, but not in beta which only has an option for "solo online" at the moment.

The weekly newsletter has a nice bonus for beta testers and those who have pre-ordered

"We are also announcing a special pre-order digital pack, the Elite: Dangerous Mercenary Edition, which is a bonus pre-order game collection loaded with digital extras...Anyone who has already pre-ordered the final release version of Elite: Dangerous (including of course Alpha, Premium Beta and Beta participants) will also receive the bonus pre-order collection when the game is released.
[contents are:]
- An additional Eagle fighter ship docked in a secondary location [looks nice]
- Exclusive pack of ship paint jobs
- A day one ship decal
- A digital players guide
- A digital concept art book
- Plus additional in-game benefits and other digital goodies to be announced over the coming weeks
There's also an image which appears to show 15 ship types available in beta 2 (too large to link directly :p) and a few hints that the next update will come in time for the 30th anniversary.

I'd buy it right the fuck now if that pack would come with beta access. But they're still asking 60? for that, so no thanks.

This thread has definitely brought back some very fond memories of playing this as a kid on the BBC and later on my ZX Spectrum.

Foundthis pagewhich basically lays out everything about the original game.

If the new version is even a pale shadow of the original I'll be grabbing it.

Started playing the beta, which caused me to go out and buy an x52 pro joystick and headtracking device as I was enjoying it that much. Upgraded from the starting Sidewinder and am now playing 'pimp my ride' in a Cobra Mk3. The game shows a lot of promise but there are still huge swathes of it missing, I don't have much confidence that they will fix that by the time it goes live at the end of the year - still, what it has is enough to keep me entertained for a long time.

My biggest concern is the network code. As they work through the stages of beta 2 I seem to go from a stable game but rarely seeing another player, to an unstable game I can only play in solo (online) mode, and I have a pretty good internet connection. I think - I hope - that each of these betas and mini-betas is them trying out specific things, seeing what works and what doesn't.

But when it works, you can spend hours in this game...

Beta 3 is incoming today

- Two new ships (including the first Imperial faction ship)
- Playable area increased to over 2,400 star systems
- asteroid mining
- interdiction (intercepting other players and NPCs from "supercruise" flight)
- fuel scooping from stars
- lots of new graphical touches for planets (ice caps, volcanic features, complex craters, "colours now reflect chemical composition")
- usual pages of bug fixes (e.g. "Moved Horsehead nebula"

)

A bit of new information came out with the latest newsletter

Elite: Dangerous Newsletter #47

- After November 22nd the opportunity to join the Beta will no longer be available for new players, but the Beta backers can continue to test the game, with new builds (three so far in the last week) until the release
- In Elite: Dangerous there will be areas of the game that will not be immediately accessible. Players may have to build a reputation with the governing faction in order to be given a permit to visit an area under their jurisdiction.
- The Solar system is restricted in this way... All visiting commanders will need a permit, granted by The Federation in order to visit Sol or anywhere in the Solar system. However, all Alpha and Beta backers will be given an automatic permit, without having to first earn a reputation with The Federation.

Same boat here (but I already had the X52 pro

), Trackir 5 on its way.

Just the process of relearning playing with a bloody flightstick is enjoyable, I remember Xwing vs TIE fighter and being a pro there... how far my skills have fallen. Now struggling to not crash the ship into the station when landing...(oh and please someone tell me how to see just what docking bay is for me! Last night I was in the first station and played "find your docking bay" with 3 other ships, was a bit annoying with 4 yellow landing pad markers but not knowing which was yours).

But yeah, this has a diffrent level of fun compared to my experiences with SC so far. Only thing I would wish is for multi-player ships so you could share piloting/shooting with a friend or two.

Doesn't it indicate that just above your radar after you've requested docking? I haven't played since beta 1 but I remember it being somewhere on your HUD.

I bought the beta and an X52 last week. Haven't had much time to play it yet.. game is a bit daunting tbh... Wish the tutorials were a bit more comprehensive. Is it worth getting a TrackIR for this?

Bit OT: Are there any good combat flight simulators people would recommend?

Re spoiler: Playing a year free and finally got to Jets, so a bit of a grind to unlock everything, but otherwise love War Thunder as a actually good F2P type game. Guess I should say I waited for a special event a few months in and bought a years worth of premium. (subscription basically) key for never running into money issues. Has both arcade mode, semi realistic, and simulation depending what floats your boat. Also now has tank battles though Im not a huge fan.

Just set up my TrackIR! It adds quality of life stuff since you can (obviously!) just look left/right to see the panels, so far its very nice but have not tried any combat yet so will see how that goes

So, apparently they did a 180 about the offline solo thing? Pretty shitty in my opinion considering how "well" the online play has worked so far for them.

I was actually looking forward to play this like in the good old days, solo, offline at my own pace. Since the only interaction I have had in open play has involved assholes killstealing around nav points, I dont know if I should demand a refund out of pinciple and a slight worry about them pulling the plug on the game in 1-2 years or if I should go for online solo play (what a stupid fucking idea).
