I hope everyone is tempering their expectations when they say things like EQN will be hard.
Actually, it's something they are wondering about privately. The game will be hard, they are worried about the reception of it's difficulty by the player.

I prefer the game to start like EQ2. Have a short intro stop off isle where beginning players learn the game before they hit the mainland. Early players go to the starting beach-head and then the war machine founds a major city(one the developers might like to be an Orgrimmar). Then, people just branch out to other cities and make it player driven which ones are rebuilt first. They do not have to be as difficult as the 'intro' rebuild so that racial cities can be in very early. I don't think this will happen because people really suck at gaming and organization but I can hope. That will always be the hardest part of making an MMO. KISS for the vast majority of gamers who are mouth breathers.
This is wrong. EQ had it the best. You start in a large city of your race. How is that not the best way for an MMO to start? I can't think of one argument against it other than the developers crying about having to make content for every race but boohoo that's what makes a game go from good to great.

EQ Freeport / Neriak was amazing. You make multiple starting cities with newb areas out front and then branch them out and intersect with other cities so that by the time you hit level 10+ you're in the same zone as the closest city players of the same level (EC/WC).

They always are. I went to Blizzcon in 2008~ and even though I consider myself pretty nerdy, I've never felt so out of place in my entire life.
Fuck... That's what I was afraid of.

I'm nerdy in the sense that I like to play MMORPGs, and prefer fantasy/sci-fi themed entertainment. I 'write' as a hobby, and develop fantasy settings, lore, maps, etc. Aside from that, you'd never really know it. I don't go shouting it from the rooftops or cosplay as Firiona Vie. In fact, I don't get along well with the hardcore geeky type.

I have this image in my head of getting a few like-minded dudes together in Vegas, getting all wasted at Planet Hollywood, and trying to party with the SOE devs. Maybe get some bad local blow and pay some strippers to dance while we LAN.

In reality, it'll probably be a lot more like the gatherings at the local comic book store when I used to play Warhammer.

Le sad.

This just shows you haven't been following this game. This isn't EQ re-skinned. For the storyline they have created, the EQ2 set-up of a starting island is far superior New players and alts can start at the rebuilt racial cities. Unless they change the story(very doubtful), starting cities make no sense. There are no levels so funneling players to areas where they can finds groups isn't needed. If you want to explore something with others, you can do it at any time with anyone.

The Hitler video was great. Some great jokes especially the clearing of the room by the DPS and the back to WoW. Good stuff.

This.

Sure, but they wrote the story to align with the design decision. If they wanted a bunch of huge starting cities, they easily could have written the story that way.

Also, who the fuck really thinks the storyline of EQNext is going to matter much? Please... maybe back in the day it mattered but MMO's these days don't even bother to keep a decent storyline.

Look at kudos posts this week. I think he's just on his period.
crazy gonna crazy..

Are you gonna go to SoE Live? I thought about it. I was going to go last time, but glad I didn't after what Tad told us. I think EQN is largely done at this point, so i'm assuming/hoping we would see a lot more of it than what they showed last year.

I thought about going to SOE Live but I think if I'm travelling to any game related thing it'd be E3 again. I can't imagine going to an event solely focused on one publisher (that'd go for someone like Blizzard, too). E3 is fucking great though because all the big shit is there and it's not wide open for anyone to come like PAX so you can avoid nerd flu pretty easily.

On EQN, I'm fucking excited at this point. History tells me to never be excited about an MMO, but I'm enjoying what EQNL is telling me about EQN: from developer interaction to the look of the world once you're in the game. The new biomes are great and that winter area should cross over into Everfrost nicely.

i wonder what brad is thinking about EQN.
Probably mad they don't want him anywhere near it. I mean they hired him back at SoE and they still didn't want him near it and basically sent him to his basement office away from anything worth a shit still. I can't even remember hearing about anything he did when they put him back on original EQ. He's a non-factor at this point and even SoE wants nothing to do with him.

I personally want to give a shit about story again but which setting needs less background story? Bunch of racial starting cities with a rich tradition, or coming back to a continent your ancestors fled with no knowledge of what it's like? I personally love the ideas this team has put forth.

There is no best way to start like there is not just one way to write a fantasy novel. No wonder WoW has dominated the past decade.

Gogojira,
I'm excited as well. This team is so far ahead of the curve and it's exciting to see how well they have been doing in EQL. I will prefer this game and I think it will probably be out maybe sometime early next year? Lots of great ideas so far.
