I always thought that WoW made a mistake designing their expansions like this. Killing off an entire 2 yrs of content in one swipe of a new exp pack? that's fucking nuts. I understand the game models are entirely different and the barrier for entry is diminished in WoW because of this, but at what expense? I think an entire 100% reset like this is just a waste of so much content.
Agree completely, especially considering the pace of expansions.

I'm tired of hearing about dynamic events/quests/worlds. Being dynamic doesn't make a good game. Some of the best games are very predictable & not dynamic at all. Players want carrots to strive for. Exclusive gear & content. Players want to be able to "show off". Everything is much more social now, players want to be able to brag.

Give players a reason to brag.

Players don't care about lore, immersive worlds or dynamic worlds. Players care about Facebook/Reddit/Twitter. Remember when all the high-end EQ guilds had their own website where they would "brag" about their latest accomplishments? Yea... There's a reason EQ lasted so long. Bragging rights.
The things you say don't matter if done correctly can actually create something where it's about the journey and time spent... Rather than "showing off the shiny" ... Which is basically what we have today... In cookie cutter MMO 1000000000 . . .

GW2 Dev Talk: Imagine a world where you fight off the bandit king and if your party decides to kill the Bandit King, X happens. If you lose Y happens. If you win and talk to the mayor of town, you get reward A. But if you kill the mayor, you don't get reward A but trigger event Z. All this happens in real time across multiple zones.

GW2 Reality: Multi level scripted events that trigger each other. Player behavior often sparks off these events in a cycle without much variable outcomes. In the end, these dynamic events were just scripted events happening on top of the open world layer. Almost always linear. Player reaction was just different events to grind for xp and kharma. World did not change from typical static combat.

Rift Dev Talk: With our engine, we will be able to create new dynamic events that can change the layout and textures of the over all world. Imagine Rifts fighting each other and/or slowly taking over zones. We will be able to change the face of Telara to offer you a truly dynamic experience.

Rift Realty: Very small and local spawned events with several levels of events players can win. Each event was mostly kill X in 2 minutes or some other objectives. Invasions were random groups of mobs that would take over different positions if left alone. Mostly were ignored unless a character was leveling.

--

The cynical side of me stick story bricks right in the middle of these two things. What I foresee is a world that is crafted using a finite sum of bricks. You will have your bandit/invader brick. Your rescue the princess brick. Your slay the dragon brick. In the end, you'll have your scripted GW2 events but placed randomly generating across the map like Rift's rifts. Players will be able to recognize the same pattern across the world with different skins. Just like in Rift where you say, "Oh here's another Fire rift, I know what is going to happen", in StoryBrick World you'll just see familiar patterns and the rest is arbitrary.
this is exactly what i'm afraid of when i read about Storybricks. they can do all the fancy talk they want about how revolutionary it's going to be, but i'm willing to bet a shit ton of money that it turns out to be about as original as a script for a porno.

I'd rather have an EQ remake than some half assed wannabe sandbox. But if it's a real sandbox, that would be cool. I hope they really go for it though and not just have a bunch of wussy fluffy mechanics like the burning trees thing or whatever and then that's about it. For example, in Vanguard I sometimes go to Sterling Farm and just hang around. I like the song there. But it's surrounded by mobs and I sometimes see some guy wander past called Lord Sterling or something who looks like a total beefcake.

In a true sandbox, I would love to be able to talk to them and maybe find out they use slaves and beat them or something, so I might decide to kill the whole Sterling family and then it becomes Qwerty's Farm. And maybe I earn something from it too, but I have to keep the fields clear of mobs. But then I also have to hire people to help me defend the farm otherwise a Rift type invasion comes along and takes it from me.

Basically, I'd love to spend my time doing things in game that aren't just chore quests. Smedley makes it sound like he is going to give all new kinds of gameplay but he better deliver, and it better be good.

Butler is the CD. He was responsible for crafting & diplomacy in Vanguard. I'm sure he lives for alternate modes of advancement. If they can just fucking execute this time w/o the bugs that hammered VG I'm sure it'll be hit.

I think Vanguard would have been fine if they had the full team continue working on it for another 6-12 months or whatever. Problem was, MS bailed and SOE threw it out the door 5 minutes later :\

I think the fact that they already made EQ Next once and then decided to make it all over again, suggests they might have plenty of time and budget to get it finished. My main concern is that it might be very new and interesting, but just very easy and dumbed down for average joe Playstation kiddie.

If this game works for PS4, hasn't Sony stated that all games being developed for the system (excluding games that require the PSeye) must feature remote play options for the PS Vita? If I can play EQnext on my PC, PS4 and my Vita, Sony may as well just drive up to my house and take my money now. Add a tablet crafting app and I'll probably end up unemployed, homeless, and divorced within the year.

I used to think WAR's public quests were my favorite way of "PvE questing" ignoring the retarded contribution system Mythic fucked up, you had players actively grouping together, and they were typically engaging, fun and sometimes difficult, you could set up camp and farm the shit out of them with a guild group very efficiently as well. Never enjoyed them in GW2 tho, although I think that was more from the lack of the trinity, things just turn into a big kite fest zerg rush when things started to get difficult/insta-gib. Didn't EQ2 add public quests? How do they rank up there?

I do not understand the obsession with fucking typing. Find yourself a fucking guild with people you like and get on vent, mumble, or ts. Fuck, some people use Skype for pvp because it can have the least lag.

I type all fucking day at work. Lets actually socialize. I'd crack up if the game was MMO Jesus, but the only way to communicate is VOIP.

With PS4 they should just auto put you into a group vent channel. PS4 already has a headset thrown in with it.

Jesus Christ. Even PS2 people had keyboards on FFXI and EQOA. Now you're just knit picking.
Don't care, console players can't be bothered typing and they are generally a lower form of human. I don't want to socialize with them. They should be on special plebs servers.

PC servers should have a little icon of a gold crown. Pleb servers should have an icon of a little plastic spork.

You could always you know.. get a life, talk to real people. And I could live with VOIP, I just prefer typing. It's better.

So social interaction has a limit? I fucking hate typing. In reality, you want an anonymous medium where genuine social interaction does not occur beyond your claiming of how you'd been standing in the same place in a virtual world for 5 hours farming a jerkin. You don't want a game or social atmosphere. You want a nerd rage focused AOL chat room with a fantasy avatar where time spent at the keyboard gives you pats on the head.

I forget I never pug in any mmo and rely solely on my guild who I happen to not mind the voices of.

Sometimes you have to call someone not in your social circle/guild a fucktard and typing is the only way to go.

The majority of folks I play with I know IRL. Amazing. Some are friends that have moved off. Some are former WoW guildies I met and got to know on vent first before hanging out IRL. They are real people.

Your statements reveal much how you see a "social" game.

Oh and nothing sucks worse than having reasonably paced content and typing. Typing is fucking awful.
