I always thought zergs got a bad rap. I think there should be a mix of skill fights and ones that just plain old need numbers.

If I made an encounter, I would make a bad ass monster just roaming the world killing everyone in agro range. Make him so that you would need like 200 people to even dent him. Let him be so leet that he is not even beatable for a expansion or two.

No keys required, no tiers, just a plain bad ass mofo roaming the country side, bieng very pissed off.

That's how I read it - an early point in the powerpont was that AI can be too good (for example go straight for the healer) so they wanted the AI to occasionally make mistakes, or get stubborn (keep targeting the guy in front). Just like a human might.
One reason I added randomness is that it makes the AI a bit less exploitable. If it's too predictable you can more easily set up a situation where you can break it. Also, as you say, if the AI for example always interrupt every heal and focus down the players one by one it would be an extremely boring game.

I'm actually more concerned with the opposite end of the stick as far as raid numbers are concerned. There were so many old fights that I wanted to do just for shits and giggles in WoW (like going back to duo Naxxramas after cataclysm came out), but all their "round peg, round hole" arbitrary bullshit, and enrage timers (FUCK enrage timers) made it impossible to gimp some of the older fights. There should be just as much flexibility for 200 people to do something as there is for 3 really solid people.

3 really solid people.
I think we talked about it in another thread awhile back but just remove unavoidable damage. No mob does 3k hits every 2 seconds just by virtue of being in range and agro on you, no room pulsing AE's that you have to soak up and heal through. You should really only have to take damage if you fuck up. No enrage timers and then 3 people can beat the last guy if they're good enough.

This way those people who enjoy the arcade fast action play can challenge themselves while guys like Tad who are on their fifth dose of geritol by the time the raid starts can join the 200 person guild where you just hope you do enough damage before everybody dies to tail swipe.

Making difficult enemy AI is almost trivial. The hard parts of designing "good" AI are exposing the decision making of NPCs to players, providing meaningful ways to influence that behavior, and allowing for interesting gameplay opportunities as a result of that behavior.

Yeah, enrage timers are seriously lame. In fact, most of the stuff that was added to make the raids more suitable competitive play made them less fun for everyone else.
Not a fan of this line of thinking. Enrage timers are there to prevent unintentional play. Without an enrage timer you could 1 tank X heal a boss to death.

With all the speculation of how things are going to work its hard to beleive they actually pull this off.

The one thing that gives me hope is that isnt this how the greatness of Eq came about, these guys just said fuck it we are making something new!

Maybe they dont deliver on their promises but I think the formula could turn out the Everquest I want to play for another 15 years

I haven't played an MMO since EQ1. Are lengthy quests for keys/flags to epic zones still a part of the genre? Is it something you think we can expect to see carry over to this title? It was definitely one of my favorite parts to end game raiding in the GoD/luclin era.

No designer is really a fan of enrage timers for every encounter. It's a band-aid but something of a necessary evil with the typical design. Restricting unintended gameplay is a fine line to walk - few people doubt the awesomeness of rare hunting in UO or fd pulling in EQ, and neither was foreseen by its respective dev team.

what exactly is wrong with that?

let players come up solutions to beat encounters based on their party/raid makeup. do not force a singular way to beat a boss.
Isn't that exactly why we have shitty guides nowadays for raid bosses? they all have one path to beat them? doesnt that kindof suck?

You know what else prevents one tank and one healing duoing shit? Not ever having the resources to do it.

Did you really just defend enrage timers? Holy shit man, re-evaluate your life.

I liked enrage. I played a mage, so pet dying was usually my worst case scenario if I did not pay attention to the red text. Usually the tell for an enraged mob was dead rogues. Oh yeah, look at my crits. Look at them I said! I am a DPS God! GOD I SA.... shit, rez please!

I doubt that'll carry over. Anything that divides a player base is typically bad. "Let's go do XYZ dungeon...oh you're not flagged nm." The novelty of a long ass quest chain to unlock some uber zone gets old by the time you're helping your 50th friend do it so they can play with you. I'd do another Ahn'Qiraj opening though personally. Just not for a dungeon as shit as Ahn'Qiraj.

Enrage timers, when a boss goes rape mode if you haven't killed him after 6 minutes or whatever and basically ends the fight. Not EQ-autoriposte Enrage.
