I want a challenge, not nerve-wracking, soul destroying, balls to the walls action even for crafting, mind you, but not even autoattacking while going to the fridge.
No one wants Progressquest either.

A mob shouldn't be challenging because you lack the DPS rotation to kill it. It should be challenging because a tactical error during the fight means bad things happen (the mob escapes; reinforcements come; you get rooted and nuked because you didn't counter/kept an escape available; etc...). And yes, that means if you go to the fridge during the fight, you die. But if you don't go, then you can chat with your guildmates while you kill it.

Anyway, it's amazing how many people in the EQN thread never appear to have actually played EQ.
I think there are a decent amount of people posting in this thread who have very limited experience with EQ, EQ2 or VG. I think that's where some of the disconnect comes from. I din't play EQ2 much but I see EQ and VG just different games than a lot of the other popular games. The philosophy is different.. Even tho SoE changed them over the years to be more inline with what was in and working. You need to look at SoE as a brand and realize that when they sit down and talk about EQN they look into those games for examples. That's not to say they wont use what's working in other games but I think they are more likely to make something EQ or VGish. Just my opinion.. So in regards to combat I think we might see a smaller UI, slower style. Not sure how it will work but there is a chance that's what we get

I always roll a caster. Ill probably go Wizard since that was my class in EQ.

Really hoping they throw in some old abilities like mana burn!

Had a good experience in EQ the other day which reminded me why none instanced dungeons can be great. I was in mistmoore (a none instanced dungeon to you youngsters) and I had fought quite far inside, then a mob had a pathing issue and caused a train and I died. So I had a long journey back, naked, and I was expecting to have to fight all the way back to where I was again. But when I got there, there was a high level guy who just killed everything. So I got a free ride back to my corpse! And then we started chatting, and he was looking for an item which he didn't know much about so I told him where it was.

Anyway half an hour later I ask him how his search is going, and turns out he just died inside. So I invis myself and go in and grab his corpse and bring out and rez him. He is really grateful and then gates out because he is giving up. But we both helped each other out and we had some good chats.

In hindsight... this is a boring story, sorry. But it was important because I am always solo these days so I don't talk to people in game very much. And yet this was still a nice interaction that helped us both, and we both had a good conversation for a few minutes. You just don't really get that in modern games now. I go and run an instance in some other game and they barely say 2 words.

I always roll a knight. So paladin or sk right out the gate. Hopefully they're able to tank or do something useful.

I'm not sure how relevant all our discussion of EQ1 vs VG vs WoW gameplay really is to EQN. It's interesting anyway, but there's been literally nothing solid said about game mechanics. But pointing out people that post here havent actually played EQ1 is only relevant if you expect/wish for a remake of EQ1. Any teasing Smed and Co. allow themselves, which is certainly (hopefully?) carefully measured and part of their PR, points in a different direction.

Afaik they reuse the Lore and world, not the gameplay. Arenanet did that with the Guild Wars franchise, and there is still a rabid fandom demanding the GW2 open world to be changed into a more GW1-like lobby-based mission game. Now Smed is avoiding the EQ3 label at least, but that doesnt stop people from demanding EQ1 reloaded apparently.

I hope the reveal next month gives out enough solid info to actually speculate in a direction that we know is related to the game at hand. I'm kinda thinking they will go the PS2 approach and give you a basic skeleton then monthly updates with new features. PS2 has been pretty good about that (neverending FPS shooter balance whining aside).

If they have dorfs, I'll make a dorf, melee of some kind. And if they have enchanters I'll make an enchanter. Beyond that I have no plans or expectations, and I hope that race/deity are as important choices as class and that you cannot change either afterwards (unlikely I know, but this whole thread is about dreams after all).

Nah there are people arguing that slow combat sucks or auto attack sucks or whatever. They shouldn't even judge if they haven't experienced it for themselves. It really did not suck.

I'm in the middle though, I want it more or less like EQ but it needs to be made more interesting and exciting. I just hope they can do that without making it too easy.

As for class I'll go druid or chanter.

Class wise? Depends what they do to monk. If they're more than +1 DPS or halfassed dps/tank, then I'll be rolling one.

I want fucking utility out of it. A goddamn martial arts master will have interrupts/stuns/cripples/dazes available to him. Also, FD. FD is a must, even if not as a pulling tool.

Meh, depends on selection, likely necro first, but soon enough, one of each class to try them out. Altoholic here.

This used to be the norm. This is a great example of what made EQ a great game. Friends and helping each other out. Now if you even mention this as being a strong reason to encourage "forced" grouping, people start screaming and hollering about being forced to do anything. Then they go log in, solo all night, log off and head to the forums to complain about how games nowadays suck and they can't quite put their finger on why.

Mashing buttons just gets tiresome, frankly and patches and respecs just make learning the little songs and dances annoying

Maybe I just prefer pro level XCOM to pro level SC2. Both are good but again, less button mash and some down time along with no solo to 60 promotes the social aspects.

Even though it is a "boring" story, you point still stands. The death mechanics in EQ probably created more friendship and connections than any other new mechanic introduced over the years to quickly find groups to play together. Everyone who played EQ has stories of using summon rods, CoHing to safety, trains of doom created from deep CRs and so on. Tells to random clerics or necros, who more often than not, dropped everything to help, simply because they could. I remember rushing to a zone to coh out someone who had fallen under the ice in some river and could not find the way out and was drowning. I still remember at the very beginning. I did not know what I was doing, a guy asked for a bind. I said I did not know if I had the spell. He then guided me to the spell merchant, then we stood outside freeport for over an hour while I fizzled out bar after bar of mana. He found it funny, so he waited around for it. When I finally managed to cast it (at this point there was an audience of my continued fizzle failure) he gave me a Robe of the Oracle as thanks, which was a crazy upgrade for me at the time.

There is certainly a lot of nostalgia involved with EQ that makes it sound better than what it was, it had its fair share of bad sides. But I do think it is nonsense to say that it is "progress" to remove any feature that creates downtime. Just because something is instant does not mean it is better, in fact, it is usually the opposite.

People just wont understand that. Again, there are people posting here who didn't play EQ or picked it up and didn't like it. I can understand why they wouldn't want certain features.. they never knew them...
