Ruby weapon was hard; Emerald weapon was faceroll easy in FFIIIIIII.
So was running from Qeynos to Freeport, if you weren't a drooling retard.

The point is that it was a right of passage. I have invested this much time/effort in the game to be able to accomplish this. I bred the best chocobo, I learned the geography and mechanics of a huge expanse of Norrath, and then gambled my time on it.

It's not about how 'hard' things are in video games all the time.

Is this confirmed?
Not exactly. It was mentioned by Georgeson, and also the lore points to us starting out in Qeynos. The story begins as the combine returns to Amaril (Antonica) after being gone for many years and build up Qeynos.

This is the way I understand it, at least.

Of course, we don't know what percentage of the playable races are actually in the Combine, which leaves the number of starting cities a bit of an open question. My bet is the game launching with 1-3 cities, with additional starting locations opening up as we build them in Rallying Calls.

I'm usually not a fan of the one-starting-city approach, but the idea that we're starting with few cities so that we can go out and colonize the rest of the continent over time actually sounds really cool.

One starting city fits their narrative and their choice to ensure everyone has a lot of other players around for a while. It will suck for people who like different starting experiences and for any alts made later in the game. One RC every 3 months means there will a long wait for anyone who wants to start their race in the new city if that's even an option.

Can I live with one starting city? Sure, I will probably have to but it sure would have been nice to start elsewhere with the 1-2 alts i'm sure I'll make. There can still be a great immersive story to be had. It will just be shared much more with other characters. A lot of the somewhat unique stories will be lost because the chance of other players doing the exact same thing as each other is a lot greater.

The run on my bard (second character after I ditched my level 6 barb shaman) from Qeynos to Freeport is up there with defeating the Emerald Weapon in FF7, and beating Battletoads and Zelda II, for best gaming moments ever.
I agree. I started my Mage in Freeport and a bard friend of mine also started there. We were at the level where I could cast invis but not see invis and my friend who had a rog decided to take us over to Qeynos. We were in the pass running up along the walls all 3 invis but can't see each other trying to stay together etc. My bard friends invis faded and he got killed and said fuck it because we couldn't find a bind in rivervale and he gave me consent. I looted his whole body and then we finished the trek and I gave him his stuff and he started a new bard in Qeynos lol. Also had a similar time where we escorted my friend who made a troll and wanted to play with us near qeynos so we safely got him to just inside the qeynos lines and the only person there to bind him was some douchey roleplayer who refused to do it yelling things like foul beast get out of my city. Then a guard wandered by and killed the troll sending him back to Grobb lol.

We still don't know for sure whether there will only be one starting city.
From what I can gather and they seem to be saying.. Day one, servers open, everyone starts in same place... 1 year later there may be 4 or 5 starting cities..

Edit;
Omg.. The stupid at reddit makes my teeth hurt. Some dumbass started a thread asking for a class that dual wields shields... Shields.. Wha, huh? I don't even....

And there are people who agreed with him...

Shields....

I sort of like the idea of one starting city if it means the further away you get, the more dangerous it gets. As I said before, there's not much of a 'frontier' feeling if there's a noob starting zone and city in every other zone.

I doubt there's going to be anything as unforgiving as an EQ corpse run, but imagine having to travel all the way out again from Qeynos each time you died. That could be a good middleground that makes dying a pain in the ass, without being absolutely debilitating.

One starting city is just lazy design. Throw some lore on it and people are like, "cool bros".

Edit: Did anyone else think that black box looked empty?

For instance, Pearlabyss said they had 50 people working directly on Black Desert, and that they were a very small company. We know the guy doing the Voxel engine is solo, and what is there, three guys at story bricks? Plus those are subbed out.

In the Black Box video the place looked like a ghost town to me. I have very little faith that anything has been done for the 3 1/2 years since this project began. I'm betting they want us to create 95% through Landmark, and depending on how successful it is, will determine when EQN launches. If Landmark fails EQN is DOA

This comment really makes no sense. If the entire world and game is designed around having one starting city, and the positives and negatives that come with that - I don't necessarily see why it's lazy. Should they shoehorn in multiple starting cities just for the sake of having multiple cities? Even if it's inconsistent with the lore, world, and mechanics of the game?

Who knows, maybe they'll have multiple starting areas, but Qeynos will be the only 'main city'.

For every one of you, there is one of me.

Who, every time he started a new alt, got a port directly to Freeport.

I'm not levelling up in the underpopulated deserts that were Toxx, Innothule, Feerott, Butcherblock, Misty, and Everfrost just because it felt better from some immersion/RP perspective. Fun > immersion, and levelling up alone in an MMO ain't fun. It didn't lead to new experiences, because after level 15 you were naturally filtered into the mid level xp zones anyway. The only thing it did was make you learn a new town (one that you'd probably never return to after level 20) and xp for 6 hours in a zone with different flavour than the next.
I couldn't disagree more. When I started Back in 99 I remember there were about 20-30 people per starting zone and it was perfect. Now you have 500 people all running over each other doing the same quest trying to out pace the pace. Fun eh?

With 20-30 people you meet randoms that become friends. I started many alts in EQ just to explore the areas they started in. Was some of my fondest memories.

I agree that one city is poor and not a fan of this, I totally agree. I completely hate noob zones due to its nature, a ghost town after all players lvl up, its core design is a toss away area after 10 lvl or so and no means to return to it or wanting to. This is poor design.
But as I watch this game unfold, read up on the lore books and reflect, I tend to think that the one city wont be just a noob zone but a Hub. Possibly as other cities are built to a RC lvl, new players might have the option to start at those cities later.

What I expect to see on day 1 are players hitting the ground running for land grab expansion. Meaning those who dont like Qeynos will venture out as fast as they can to get to the city they were wishing was available at character creation. Troll and Ogres heading straight for Grobb, Darkelf to Neriak, Barbs to Halas..etc

I suspect this game will have the same deal as SWG in you cant sell to NPCs. A total player created and sold economy. With that I would guess there will be land plots or tents along the way and other POI that players can help construct to serve as stepping stones to continue lore NPC points, tasks, quests and bazaar (buy/sell) and distance from the core Hub Qeynos.

There is a good chance travel might be a pain and a reason to keep the stepping stone mini hubs cleared and protected as player might need them to travel to and from Qeynos.

The overzealous roleplayers in EQ didn't bother me, but did anyone else encounter people who would get pissed if you inspected them without asking? That was the weirdest fucking thing.
