It's far fucking worse than that. That is supposed to be a stupidly cute weird race in FF , this is supposed to be dark elves. Blood thirsty , evil fucking dark elves.At least they don't look like this,
It's far more of a joke to see that as the EQ Dark Elf.
This is not EQ, it's EQNext. They are trying to make the game appeal to people who like this kind of stuff, and it's obviously working for some people. Anyone who can't come to terms with the fact that the characters are all going to be cartoon like and cutesy are probably going to stay upset, and that is a bit unfortunate, but I seriously doubt they are going to make any kind of major changes to how they are styling their characters.
One more thing,

Nothing will feel like it has an identity if every character model is pretty.
If everything is cute then there is no contrast to value looks against.
People picked a High Elf because they were pretty.
If you wanted a shaman that was good looking you made a barbarian.
At this rate picking a race won't matter.

They have to make all the faces look like "cute asian anime" so Pony boys SOEmote works well on them. Get use to this shit. All the good concept art got thrown out when they decided two months ago to start fresh with Voxel Farm.

Based on the concept art they've released so far it's pretty obvious they're trying to push the cute slider as far as they can to appeal to the Asian markets. Of course the problem with a cute mmo is that it won't appeal to a lot of adult western gamers.
Then again, the Asian market is so large that SOE might not care if the game fails to draw in their original fans. Instead they focus on the teenage western gamers and the Asian gamers and call it a done deal.
What will make or break the character artwork for me is how powerful their character customization is. If I can take a cute DE and make him look like that concept art from 2010, I can deal with having to look at a cartoon from time to time. It'll be no different than having characters running around in hot pink fine steel armor.

Great point and I agree. I don't give a shit if some kid makes Aladdin the wizard genie as long as I can make an evil looking necro. I just want the same options as the kiddies, to make my type of character.

I don't believe they use Reddit for feedback. As I said its a Potemkin Village where everyone says game is great and that its entire and sole purpose. Dev post there to lend it legitimacy and bump internet traffic for site up. Then Google search puts it ontop of EQN search results. So someone with no real information about EQN is lead by Google search straight into SoE's EQN Potemkin Village but they see it as a independent non SoE Reddit and not as a SoE owned site. Then they read all the posts saying how everything is super great in EQN.
Not really a bad idea on SoE's part but like others I resent the constant Dev posting on basically phony Reddit sites.
Shit, one of us should create a new EQNext subreddit. One where people can actually discuss shit without all the moderated shills.
if they want this shit to be this fucking cartoony, they should just scrap the game a fourth time and make hentai the MMO.
It terrifies you because you are choosing to ignore that it is the biggest crowd of potential players available to them.
Think about it: they have EQ. They have EQII. Neither of these games are going anywhere. It's not like their goal with EQNext is to replace either of these games, just like their goal with EQII wasn't to replace EQ. Both of those older games are still being developed, even if their playerbases have been in decline.
EQNext looks to be yet another game designed to bring more players under the SOE banner, with an emphasis on the younger generation of gamers.
That's the info all of us want to hear, but SOE isn't going to say it until it's so obvious that the question won't need to be asked.

WoW is old to this generation of gamers. I tried to get my niece and nephew to play it, EQ and EQII and they didn't last a week at any of them. It wasn't because they were hard, it was because they were "boring".
when i showed them the vids from SOE live they flipped out.
