To be fair, we saw concept art of a female DE, but the model of a male. Then again, that female concept art was more blue-grey in color, and had black eyes with purple irises. She was also more angular shaped.
The male on the other hand was fucking royal blue and had blunted features, almost identical to the male human model we saw. It wouldn't surprise me to find out that they just modified the human male to make the DE male.

There is male DE concept art... It looks nothing like this.
Why? Because like Microsoft with Kinect for the XBone, SOE is ramming their SOEmote system down our throats and making arrogant and foolish design & produc decisions based on that stubborn inclusion.
Character faces ae wide-eyed and 'blank' so SOEmote can do its job more effectively. So, for a player like Joe who wans to play a DE but doesn't want to take part in the SOEmote system, his DE is forever doomed to look like a deer in the headlights.

How the fuck SOEmote works when a player is wearing an Occulus is beyond me. I'm guessing it won't work at all.
There's no doubt in my mind that players are more likely to use a Rift over SOEmote, so if they are designing the models around their emote system they're going way too far in the wrong direction. The numbers I've seen regarding roleplay in mmogs indicates that only about 5-10% roleplay on a regular basis, and that number only goes up to 20% if you include folks that roleplay occasionally. When you take into consideration the zoomed out 3rd person perspective, it seems like a waste of time and money.
They did mention machinima though, so maybe they're expecting players to make movies and shit.

It was a marketing gimmick to get people talking.
And if it isn't compatible with the Rift, people will play the MMOGs that are.
I must be one of the only ones who isn't interested in the rift at all. Seems like headaches and endless eye strain to me.
Yeah, but if that's the case then it'll be a failure and it won't matter. I haven't read too much about long term use issues, but from what I have read the issues you cited are being taken into account.

Thing is blizzard isnt the kind of dev that does things out of house or contracts substantial parts of their new money printer, or hasnt been for over a decade. Given their incredibly slow development speed and the canning of titan 1.0 they dont have anything in the pipeline to keep interest in their company afloat until they can "catch up" to EQN and improve upon it in 2017-18. If Blizz trumps them eventually that's 3 years during which SOE will be laughing all the way to the bank. Deservedly so imo because even if we dont like their project and think it's a misuse of the EQ brand (which it is), it's also the first fresh wind in this stagnating mire of a genre in a long time. I'll be trying it out for the game it actually is and probably like it. Not for being something with EQ in the title like I hoped, but for being a new take on what MMOs can bring to gaming instead of "quest to cap, raid, rinse, repeat".
Actually Blizzard has to thank SOE - they arent innovators and being as dominant in the industry as they have been for so long, there werent any good ideas for them to copy and polish up into a new AAA product. They might have the server tech and polish down, certainly. But have they ever pieced together a unique conglomeration of game components into something entirely new? I dont think so and doubt they even can do it, but I bet they'll copy EQN and make their version an even better mass market product, in 2020.

I think they're using the EQ brand name as bait to attract the EQ neckbeards; you know, the die-hard ones that have played for 14 years straight. SOE needs these uber-dedicated players to voxelcraft in-game assets that SOE can sell in the RMAH.

Dark elves look like shit. Zero character. As I posted on reddit, they look like farmers painted blue with ears slapped on them. People went crazy getting masks of deception for a reason, DE had a corrupt royal feel to them. Anyone who ever read the Elric/Stormbringer books know exactly where the DE were coming from.
