That reddit shows exactly what's wrong with the internet. For all the great things that could happen with instant, mass communication, none of it hardly ever does.
If any dev in their right fucking mind thinks a poll asking whether pirates and ninjas should be in the game is helpful or useful in any way shape or fucking form, then they're even bigger morons than I thought originally. Did it help the design of WoW that they had instant feedback from their players? No, it made WoW all the worse if they even did listen to them.
They use that medium as a PR funnel, calling it 'communication with the players' when it's really just a never-ending reach-around with paid shills or truly blind, ignorant fans to build hype for the game: the idiot posters get their egos stroked, and the devs use that stroking of ego to construct their little grassroot hype machines. Twitter is the best tool for this in the history of mass media because no fucking real, meaningful communication ever goes on, just quick 2-sentence blurbs that provide no depth or detail. Any depth or detail gets drowned out in the sea of 'mass communication'.
The best games, the best anything, have been made when people, when truly creative people, made the things they themselves wanted to make, with no outside influence, be it marketing, bean counters, or idiot players.
If you locked Aradune in a room with non-retarded engineers and animators and some coke, I can say he would probably make a great fucking game. If you put Brad on a team that included marketing and PR parrots, other idiot designers like ponytails who 'listens to feedback', then he would make the same shit that EQN will likely be.
