Well really my point is that neither of them are worth hero worship. Neither of them are really worth much of anything. That's why they're working at SOE. If it weren't for a lifelong friendship with Smed they'd both be scrounging scams on kickstarter.

It should really tell you something about that Aradune was a ranger. In vanilla. A ranger. That's fuckin deep.

I'm not worshiping him. He isn't genius, he is competent and loves the genre and CAN make good stuff, not saying he does all the time. With the shape the industry is currently in, at this point in time I would be happy as hell to have a group of devs that weren't planning on re-making the next WoW. If it takes Aradune to do it all coked up and shit, so be it. Just give me a fucking game I can play that I don't have to deal with people that can't type or speak, or think for themselves and I'll pay to play daily if need be.

Ill admit , I would very much like to be privy of butlers and mcquaids private thoughts about each other.

I just imagine one or the other realizes what you said about them and SOE and know they are stuck there and have to put up with each other along with ponytails smile.

Id gladly take brads monstrosity over butlers game he is making for my 4 year old apparently.

Any chance we can get landseagull here ? I'd love to see him on a forum without SOE mods high fiving him and deleting any arguments agains him.

Entertainment value would be high.
i agree 100%. i'd take brad's stoned out of his mind on pills cluster fuck of a game over the disney/pixar abortion of GW2 that we're going to get. vanguard was actually really fun for a few months, despite all the serious problems. i wouldn't even touch this nickelodeon monstrosity they are shitting out.

Nah. I mean why the Brad worship? He didn't write any of the areas you love. He didn't write Guk. He didn't author iAD&D, graphic edition. He lifted ideas from sojurn and tweaked them. And that's perfectly fine. That's competence. He dun good. It's not exactly genius.

If you put Brad in a room with competent engineers and a mountain of powdered vicodin what you'd get is an absurdly giant overland map punctuated here and there with little caves and occasional visually interesting landmarks. You would get entire systems of needlessly complex mechanics that interfere with each other and are completely redundant once you realize how trivial it is to min/max. You would get an unregulated, marginally stable clusterfuck. Admittedly, it would probably be an interesting clusterfuck. But you wouldn't get a game.
Out of the bunch in the industry Brad is most likely to attempt to make an EQ3. He makes a lot of sense in regards to how the industry should go.. Probably b/c a lot of us have been saying it too but go niche, small budget and build if the game takes off.

You're basing your opinion from what happen with VG. Do you think a sober McQuaid would of ended with the same result? I'm not so sure it would. The guy has went back and blogged about all the things that he did wrong building VG which shows to me is capable of learning from his mistakes. Which is a lot more than I can say from some other top names.

And you can never put a bar on someones drive for redemption.

I loved early Vanguard. I got accepted to Phase 3 beta and played it pretty heavily throughout that and into the first few months at release. I was a poor college student at the time and couldn't really afford a decent rig, so the game ran too poorly for me to continue playing. That said, it was a lot of fun and the world actually felt like a world. It was huge, open, and fun to explore. I might actually install the game just to run around for a bit.

Vanguard's world is pretty depressing...

You are running through it and it's just so huge and beautiful... And then it hits you... There are whole swaths of the world where there is absolutely nothing. It's so obviously unfinished and heartbreaking.

Not so sure about Butler but I get the impression Georgeson would make a decent EQ sequel (not EQN) if that was the goal (It's not). PS1 was a good game with some excellent ideas for it's time and he was involved there. I still think disney style and all that arent the bane of this project, attaching the EQ franchise to it is.

Yeah they rolled out a huge canvas and just never had enough paint to fill the whole thing.

it's really heart breaking to me. i was really at the bleeding edge of what little content they did have ready to go. I just wish they had taken an entire other year on the project before releasing it.

If it makes you feel any better, VG ran shitty on good rigs at the time as well...

I can't believe we're coming out of Gamescom and PAX with 2 pieces of concept art, an odd time-lapse video of one tiny speck of lavastorm, and some hilarious jumping.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall during their marketing/PR meetings.

The financialization and business-ification of the gaming industry. I'd be curious to know how many MBAs are in the industry now compared to 1993.

And yet, it's nostalgia talking, not an objective drop in quality. Right.

i agree, although just running around in the world itself was truly an amazing experience. it's just so vast it's really impressive, even if there isn't much content. kind of reminds me of playing "shadow of the colossus." i wish VG could have gotten the money it needed to become a completed project. it really was a pretty awesome world, and despite an insurmountable number of bugs, was still somehow so much fun to play.

Yes.

You puzzle the fuck out of me. I agree with a ton of what you say about what a mmo is. Then I find out you support those you rail against. Quit being addict and put your money where your mouth is

Probably a fuckton more. These businesses have gotten too large and the projects too expensive for some game designer who just happens to be in charge to competently and successfully manage. They either keep listening to their business goons or they make smaller companies that work on smaller projects. Seems like they'd rather do the former. 38 Studios is a good example of what happens when you have a big company with someone with no business acumen in charge, in that case a professional baseball player who liked MMOs.

Of course everything comes with a trade-off. Smaller studio with a smaller budget means perhaps a project that is less ambitious in scope than some fans would like.

I'm not sure why people give SOE so much leeway on having nothing to show again at SOE live. People defend them saying "they have only been developing for 6 months blah lala"

From Wiki
"The first indication that a new game was in development appeared in a chapter written by EQ creative director Rich Waters in the EverQuest 10th Anniversary Book (2009)"

It's almost 2014.

THAT is 5 years of Cock teasing.

Pathetic.
