Meh friendly fire is only bad if you look at this game from a DIKU view. I want to give it a try.

Look at from FPS/shooter perspective and it doesnt sound too bad. You'll have griefing at some points, but you had that in the more open EQ environment too, and people are sick of the closed environment we've had for the last 10 years (or if not, Wildstar is going to continue to provide safety fences). I'd love it if this game would take some risk by bringing MMOs and traditionally FPS/3rdPS gameplay elements like friendly fire and collision detection together. Collision detection felt great in WAR, okayish in GW1, havent played Tera. But there is some precedent and at least GW1 was a good game. I cant really think of an MMORPG with friendly fire (UO?) but some were FFA pvp which isnt nearly the same but at least the general direction. If you look past RPGs obviously Planetside 1 and 2 have friendly fire and it's ok there. Why not bring that into RPGs. It's gonna cause hilarious shit down the line, dont be so scared of trying new stuff or you'll be stuck with WoW-likes forever.

It still blows my mind this industry is in the state it's in today. The MMO is essentially a dead genre. Just look at the vast wasteland of complete crap and countless upon countless piles of failed titles.

I mean seriously. It's really that fucking, jokingly awful. I mean, awful. Do you remember first playing UO/EQ and the ideas you had in your head of the future with these games? I know as a young kid/teenager first playing Ultima Online, the potential I had in my mind literally had me jizzing every night. Then I played EverQuest, and those thoughts went even further.

Fast foward 20 years later, look what we have. Look at all of this, and the history of all of this. It's so depressingly disgusting it really makes you want to fuck game companies as much as you can and mostly give up gaming altogether (as I have, outside of a select few, such as Link Between Worlds).

AE damage attacks with the presence of melee classes simply don't work if you have friendly fire. You simply limit yourself in what you can do design wise for the sake of realism. Even things like melee basic attacks would be a problem if friendly fire was taken to its logical conclusions.

I don't think I'll ever understand those of you who want buttonmashing wackamole combat.

I don't want to get carpal tunnel syndrome from spending 8 hours on a Saturday playing wackamole. Physical effects aside, it's boring staring at your hot button UI all the time.

You have to build mechanics around griefing. Allow it to happen if a player wants to make that choice, but that choice entails serious consequences. Make it similar to Skyrim: one attack and you get a bounty. Killing another player would take a LOT of effort to reverse.

One player per server, per IP. Griefing wouldn't happen.
You should know better.

Consequences aren't allowed any more in games. It upsets people.

Not a good idea. As the costs of getting an IP(v4) address rises for providers, they're going to start doing mass NAT; i.e. you're going to find yourself sharing your "public" IP address with an ever-growing number of households. Assuming that "one IP = one household" is going to go the way of the dodo.

(remember: every IPv4 main address bloc has been allocated, and region registries are not getting any. There's already no new IPv4 anywhere in Asia - any provider who wants new IP to connect his customers must buy it from another company who no longer uses them)

What's preventing them from simply using the IPv6 addresses, though?

edit: outside of it not being fully adopted in usage, but still, c'mon :p

That's what they do. But, curiously, people still want to connect to a lot non-v6 services, and thus, use a v4 address (with v6tov4 you can "connect" to a v4 service even if you have only ipv6. Guess what: you have a gigantic NAT at the v6 to v4 gateway).

Can you request to not be part of the NAT cluster or is that what you're talking about there being a 'fee'. I'm sure 99% of people won't give a fuck if they're banned from xyz service...but yeah, it seems like an organizational nightmare asking everyone on a particular ipv4 addy if they're going to be playing EQ or not :p

Obvious answer would be to make new games/services which intend to do IP blocking use ipv6 addresses? Granted there's always proxies...

I don't want "wackamole" but I do want something better than what we have now. The whole rotation / ability bloat, while waiting for your next cooldown thing is bullshit. One of the worst examples of that is Rift. And all of it is an extention of the same tired old mechanics we have had since EQ/WoW etc. Everything about mmo combat should be blown up and rethought.

Some games have tried and have had limited success. GW2 had some good ideas but didn't take them far enough, I like some of TSW's ideas too, also TERA's. But we need more companies to realize that while the existing model may still pay the bills it is a dead end.

But even more annoying than current mmo combat is the fetch it quest model. I'm done with it. I log into mmos less and less because I don't want to run around like a fucking errand boy bitch. I have better things to with my time. Oh and I just loooove looking through my inventory and spending half a day figuring out what is what.

Stream line the whole process and get me to the meat of the game faster. And that doesn't mean I want a lobby instance game, for you fukwits who dont' understand what I'm talking about.

Most Mmos are old, stale and stupid. They are almost all the exact same game with different art on top.

Teras combat would have been great without the animation locks.
Also nearly impossible to tell when a boss is about to do an ability. But I suppose that does have a monster hunterish charm to it. Healing in Tera was pure awful though :|
