EQ Never

As I said earlier in this massive thread, if EQNext doesn't deliver, Everquest as a franchise will die. MMO's are somewhat on the edge right now, there have been too many disappointments after WoW. If Next is just another ho-hum experience, the whole genre might take a nap.

Can SoE bring it with EQNext? There is a lot riding on the outcome.
Most of the games this board considers failures didn't fail from a money standpoint and as far as making more games is concerned thats all that matters.

Swtor rift and Aion are all profitable, Archage and Wildstar will almost certainly turn a profit, FFXIV is turning a profit even in light of having to reboot the game, the genre isn't going anywhere.

The mmo world continues to turn without the group of people on here who are never happy.

The lack of audience growth is a severe problem from the repeated failures, even if the companies themselves didn't take a money loss. Instead of satisfying veterans and keeping them interested in a brand or franchise they are filling their subscription quotas and cash shop proceeds from a growing number of casual players who have no dedication beyond something that fills the time.

The future prediction then is simple, either someone finally makes a game that hits the ground running and steals population from all of these average just-enough fillers or attrition wins out and the entire genre suffers and dies. In the mean time how many companies are looking to make games in the same genre that aren't a direct sequel? They are very much engrossed in simply riding out what they currently have going rather risking a crash and burn successor which competes with their existing title but ultimately losses population as a whole months after release.

Every one of those games has multiple servers worth of raiders, casuals don't really raid, hell they don't make it to level cap most of the time, and the mmo population as a whole is bigger than ever. Veterans are in all of these games, they've made homes there, they enjoy them. "We've" created a cesspool on these forums where everything must be torn apart if it isn't exactly what each of us wants even though each of us is looking for something different.

Also it is inevitable that something big and new comes along and steals players, I just think it is going to come with a new technology or new way of presenting the game, like the oculus rift only a bigger advancement in peripheral, something so awesome that people will play simply for the peripheral.

People are so hyperbolic. The EQ franchise, nor the MMO industry, won't live or die by EQ Next. For fuck's sake, you'll probably see 10 new MMOs pop up next week at E3.

So true and the franchise won't die either. EQ was a wasteland the last decade and still survived. Vanguard was one of the worst disasters ever and stayed afloat until SOE wanted to restart and focus their efforts elsewhere. EQN is the best hope RIGHT NOW for a move towards something different. While nothing is determined yet, the success of SWToR and the long term viability of WoW even after multiple newer releases gives hope that the genre has a fairly robust base of people who have time to waste. The opportunity to redefine the genre is the only real possible loss here. This game will make money.

I, for one, don't predict that the EQ franchise will die, only that it should. MMOs are dead. The sooner they stop being made, the sooner we can shut down this worthless forum and put an end to the same hopelessly repetitive discussions that we see ongoing ad infinitum in every damned thread here.

This is what i wanted - an EQ1 remake with a twist. It sucks no games have bards and true support roles outside of EQ and VG.

Archeage has dedicated support. They are very powerful too. Can make monsterous CC characters and great buff/heal bards. There's even a version of selo's.

It has......bards? - i watched some videos and the game itself seemed a bit bland.

MMO genre is stagnate because people have been doing the same shit for years and not questioning why they are doing it, so they are failing to make fun games. EQN might suck but atleast I think they asked themselves why they are doing the shit they are doing and it they couldnt come up with an answer better than cause WoW/DAOC/EQ did it then they werent afraid to change.

It has no classes, but it has a music themed skill tree and you can absolutely build a bard character that plays anthems and has instruments and all that crap.

For example:Everyday Bard for 5-10man - Arche-Base

As far as feeling the game is 'bland', I don't know what to say. Everyone has different tastes. I haven't seen an MMORPG as feature-rich as Archeage... Ever. Perhaps an argument could be made for WoW. *shrug*

New male dark elf art looks way meaner than the in-game model we've seen.

You haven't seen an in-game model, you've seen a concept model from before the design document was anywhere near close to finished.
