Yet you and no one else here actually plays the fucking game. If the game is so god damn great, WHY AREN'T YOU PLAYING IT???
There is a thread about SwtoR, several people play it, it's f2p yet a lot of players spend a little money here and there and some spend obscene amounts of cash (I spoke with a guy who forked over 1k per month, the joy of being stupidly rich I guess). I play it myself, less than WoW, more than any other game. I spent several euros on it as well, because I think the game deserved them. I don't know why you hate the game so much.

Wow, that's hard to grok. I make a stupid amount of money (or so I thought), and I' a big believer in "spend your money how you fucking want", but even with all that I think my head starts to turn somewhere around $200-300 a month on gaming.

This guy was crazy, or maybe batshit insane for those 70$ packs on the cartel market, he was buying a dozen per month and did so for a good while, together with all the assorted novelties. I can certainly imagine people like that spending a ton of cash in EQN for buildings and whatever will be on the shop, I may aim at being one of his suppliers

Hah - and people like him are why F2P models can work. His $1000 a month covers 65 other people compared to a traditional sub model. I'm sure he's rare, but still.

Actually there was someone who posted a research, where it was stated that the majority of the cash comes from the minority of the players and the amount of those that don't spend any money is quite large, but it provides a lively game for those willing to spend (and that's the main reason why this is a successful model). Maybe it was still back on FoH, can't honestly remember.

What I recently read was this article, that explains how these spending folks are rarely impulse buyers, yet more methodical and careful spenders, but heavily supported the game:Free-to-play whales more rational than assumed | GamesIndustry.biz

And here it's stated that the market of f2p is growing in the US and declining in Europe:Free-to-play online games market - Market Data and Reports - SuperData Researchwhich is probably also a derivvate of tihs shitty economic situation the ? currency caused to this continent, but that's another story.

I can tell you I spent more money on Planetside 2 on it's f2p shop then I did if it just cost $15 a month. I don't feel bad about it because I enjoyed it.

That whole dynamic is problematic and unsustainable for the industry.

Don't take this as a attack on you but those links show just how bad gaming companies understanding of f2p market is.

One link just says stop calling whales whales. It also doesn't bother to define what a whale is. Would the average EQ and WoW subscription player be considered a whale are does it have a definition that is above that $ per month rate. Then at the end it waves the lets replace gamers with hobbyists meme because the hobbyists will spend more money. I doubt trying to replace gamers with hobbyists is ever going to happen with video games.

The second link shows rough parity with average revenue among countries with a sharp divergence by by US at the end of the graph. That information is two years old and is basically useless. Did the US surge continue? Did others keep slowly declining. Did the others eventually follow US and surge upwards as well or did you US trends reverse and fall back towards the norm?

So SWTOR is super successful and profitable, yet only a few hundred thousand people play it (compared to the millions who began playing it at release) and even fewer spend money on it. got it.

You know, it's okay to lose an argument. It really is. We won't think any less of you for it.

Comments like the one quoted, on the other hand...

Deal with it man. SWTOR has probably seen 5 million+ unique players by now. They are making money hand over fist. SWTOR is definitely in the top 5 MMORPGs of all time. You should try it.

How much do they pay you to white knight for a game that you don't even play?

He isn't white knighting it. He is giving actual numbers and data to prove success of a product on something other then feels.
I'm sure he quit playing after a month if he ever even tried the game. With WoW losing subs someone had to take some of them away and there's few really solid options out there. It must hurt to think that a SWToR sequel will get made far more quickly and easily before anyone will ever try to remake EQ.

Hopefully they dont use the graphics engine FROM EverQuest when they make their next one. Jesus - the plans they had for that game made me all kinds of moist and then they scrapped all of it when the engine wouldnt support it. Story was good, but fuck man... I would have loved free flight space. Docking in busy Space stations. PVP that didnt hinge on having less than 20 people on screen. Etc. etc. etc.

Hoping Star Citizen scratches some of that itch and I agree. It is good to see vision though even if it unfortunately doesn't see the light of day many times.
