To be fair, those effects are generally lightning fast, and don't linger on the screen. Whoever took these shots zeroed in on the split second that they appear.
I think we all knew that, Hence the humorous captions on each image. It doesn't change the fact that the particle effects are huge and mostly unnecessary for most abilities. More is less for 90% of the abilities save the crazy flashes and ae effects for ultimate and cooldown. To be fair, those effects are generally lightning fast, and don't linger on the screen. While EverQuest's spell effects weren't as large, they had a ton of particles that stayed on the screen for a significant amount of time, both during the cast and once it resolved:
EverQuest Classic - EQClassic - EQC - Spell Effects - YouTube
I'm sure EQN will have an option to turn-down/off spell effects
Makes you wonder what kind of game these devs made prior to this one doesn't it?I think we all knew that, Hence the humorous captions on each image. Back when abilities all looked the same and you stared at chat to identify unique attacks as they spammed by?Again, grumpy old man gamer...but I miss the days when I could process everything going on in combat
Particles effect and the like are to me at least, non issues. I mean of course i would like them to be toned down or removed all together Its very low on my totem pole for game enjoyment.Makes you wonder what kind of game these devs made prior to this one doesn't it?

There is a game who had the option "show only mine and hostile". I thin WoD will have something similar. The only people in past MMO's that have gave a shit about Particle Effects are Melee and thats simply because we can see shit and fuck when we're at a boss encounter. Nothing like having the entire floor a mixture of rainbow colors and you're suppose to visually get a queue to get out the Black Hole, Fire spot, acid whatever the fucking color is on the ground along with death and decay, a mage thats too close with circle, aoe effects coming down blah blah blah. Its too much, even on low settings imo. I couldnt imagine them taking WoW back to 40 man and that shit still be over the top like it is. 25 Man is bad enough.
But like most of you have said ~ we can only hope they tone that obnoxious shit down or at least give the player the option to only see hostile Particle Effects. Which is all Ive ever wanted anyways. I could give a fuck that someone is casting Blizzard in my area if its not hurting me.
I'd watch a Jeremy Soule version of "I whip my hair back and forth" starring a bedazzled ole' Ponytail. If he would have bedazzled his pony tail it would have been a 1 hour standing ovation.
Im not home to see if the Beta has it in, but Ill log in and check it out for sure. The only game I remember having those options in is EverQuest. That should be a shame on fucking you to the entire MMO Design Community. If Developers are so hung up on particle effects, then they should have certain NPC's that once aggroed will actively turn off every other Particle effect being rendered except his. That way my video card, no matter how old, isnt forcing out High Definition flames from the 150000000 torches lining the room of some random boss. Then when hes defeated, a subtle increase in particle effects until back to normal. Each particle effect has a specific name, so this shit cant be that hard. There is a game who had the option "show only mine and hostile". I thin WoD will have something similar.
This is pretty much how F2P works. The majority of the playerbase will never pay a dime into the game. A significant portion will give around $20 or less and a small portion (aka the whales) will spend literally thousands of dollars and will make the game profitable. So having a guy sink tons of cash into a game isn't quite as rare as you may think.Hah - and people like him are why F2P models can work. His $1000 a month covers 65 other people compared to a traditional sub model. I'm sure he's rare, but still.
