But someone with access would be highly unlikely to get caught-- provided the DB is fenced properly using any of the available anonymity options.
I strongly suspect however it may not be on the company LAN, and is likely in permanent storage hardware since VG was shut down.
This would require serious effort and subversion to boot said hardware, locate said hardware to where it can be booted and accessed properly. As well as any applicable security passwords that might be on the offline hardware to protect it.
If it was a matter of sitting on the LAN it would have been done by now.
