When I load mods on "modern" games, I usually look on Steam workshop collections, then look at when the mod pack (collection) was updated. Since Fallout 4 can go suck eggs, I dunno how well it's setup on steam workshop. Here is an example from TW: Warhammer 3:

The shortcuts are bullshit. If you wanna really mod you gotta go balls deep on learning xEdit, load order rules, and leveled lists. If you're not spending more time modding than gaming you're doing it wrong.

Reminder: there's The Midnight Ride, which is Fallout 4's version of Viva New Vegas. Should always be used as a base level for any FO4 installation imo.

From that point you can add stuff like visual overhauls, sim settlements 2 or whatever settlement mod(s) you prefer, etc.

One thing I strongly recommend against trying is to bother with gun replacements. Fallout 4's weapons are some of the worst in the history of gaming but I found out the hard way that the replacers just don't work well. They won't be a 1:1 match for moddable parts, they'll probably change the damage and be overpowered, and they'll definitely break unique versions (like Overseer's Guardian, etc.) even if the mod injects the replacers into leveled lists, which is the correct way of doing it.

You also can't fix the retarded bolt action rifle design. Apparently even though finding a left handed rifle is damned near impossible without doing a special order today, somehow every single rifle that survived 200 years after the nukes in Boston is left-handed. The player character (and every NPC) is right handed though, so the animations look completely fucked up. There are mods to mirror the guns and replace the animations so you work the bolt correctly, but unfortunately this leaves NPCs broken still. Tried a few different mods and they all had the same issues. 80% of the time it looks great, 20% is a complete disaster.

In the end I only used the guns I wanted to replace for a few hours and as soon as I got to the DLCs the combat rifle was replaced with radium rifle and handmade rifle anyway. I settled for just fixing the ammo those guns use: .45 in the radium rifle is just as idiotic as it is in the combat rifle, so I changed it to 5.56mm since it exists in the base game but is only used for one gun, and I also made it so 7.62mm could be looted/bought/crafted in the main game instead of having to run back to Nuka World every time you get low. Simple changes like that work perfectly, anything more complicated is just going to break a bunch of other stuff.

Probably the same retarded problem Counter-Strike had for years where all the weapon models were flipped for some reason. Would make sense with Bethesda running a game engine as fucking old as CS.

Yeah, the explanation I saw for it was that because of how much space FO4 guns take up, if you have a normal righty bolt half the animation is cut off the side of the screen. I guess the artists didn't like that, and decided it would better showcase their work if they made lefty bolts and righty animations. It's pretty clear that Bethesda doesn't have a single person working there who knows anything about firearms to begin with (especially if you also take a look at what they did in Starfield).

yea that worked the opposite of good.
Sorry bro, but I swear I did this for Skyrim, over like 175, mods and it worked like a charm. I even had characters having sex with each other and shit, lol. Only thing I had to do is get some script editor or some shit off of some other site that was not on Nexus. That was the only thing I had to do to make it all work. Maybe the latest patch fucked it all up for Fallout? Or the game is just not popular like Skyrim is, and not enough mod support and updates? Who the fuck knows.

It sounds like it was a recent update that broke it. Honestly though, I tapped out of the convo as soon as I realized there wasn't an easy mode to using a bunch of mods.

I'm not interested in long, complicated instructions to install a bunch of mods. I'd like to try the fully modded games some time, but I don't care enough to fiddle fuck with it.

Bored. Playing a bit FO4 on the ol' xsx. Doing the dlc with the island. Should I waste Tektus and make him a synth or just let him go?

That's almost all console fixes. The update was completely unnecessary on PC to begin with, since it improves literally nothing compared to how the game was pre-patch. The native ultrawide support was the one thing it was supposed to add and that shit is completely broken. The only thing it actually adds is a bunch of Creation Club style garbage, you can't even call what they added "content"... it's just some items, which again are bugged and practically unusable.

It's also still mostly broken when it comes to mods. The big issue is that every mod that uses F4SE (which is itself still in a beta state and nowhere near as stable as it was a month ago) has to be updated to function again, and a lot of the creators have long since moved on to other things. The update was a complete disaster, only reason my game still works is because I installed it right before the update hit and have avoided patching by only launching the game from Mod Organizer 2, not Steam.

Worst of all, it probably will end up delaying the Fallout London project by months when it should have been released already.

Well, the easiest solution to get mods working is probably to pirate the build from right before the patch. I'm sure you can find it in the various places.

If you already own it you can just use the normal Midnight Ride setup which uses a downgrade tool to get everything working. (Everything included with TMR, that is. If you want to use extra stuff you have to make sure you're getting a version for the older version and not the latest beta of F4SE.)

Any way you choose sounds like an extra pain in the ass layer right now. Which makes it rather funny.
