I finished FO1 probably about 5-6 years ago. When it was originally out I played it, but for whatever reason didn't finish it. It was reasonably enjoyable, although the game even then hadn't aged very well. Right after finishing FO1 I tried to play FO2, but I just couldn't stomach how terrible the interface was by more modern standards and had to drop it. Are you really missing much not having played FO2?

It's amazing how some older games actually age quite well, and some are just horrid. And generally it's not for graphics or other technical reasons. It's simply because of terrible UI and gameplay design in most cases.

1) Fallout 2 is considered by many to be the best. Regardless of that opinion it's a must play if you like the series since so many events that take place in later games start with FO2. (IE: Enclave/NCR taking off)
2 ) I think like Planescape, FO1/FO2 both have aged great.

You mean data I already had magically disappearing from my pip boy?

Keely should have been in that cave from the start, since her notes were already there and she was trapped. There's no reason for the whole quest to not play out in the exact same way whether you've met with Hildern before or not.
Ahh i see.

I feel like FO2 has aged pretty well due to the visual design of the game. The only awkwardness for me is occasionally clicking on the right thing but otherwise the game still is just fantastic. Keep in mind I have more hours in that game than probably any other non-mmo game I've ever played.

Have you played it with high res patch and content restoration mod ? Those two solve most of my complaints about the age.

Some stuff is still weird, the loot/trading UI and the idea that you want to skip some parts of the game until you get high enough stats to minimize backtracking, but I guess that's the depth that makes the game replayable. Certain weapons are effectively difficulty settings of their own, like gauss gun, hunting rifle or SMGs at the start and the game can cheerfuly punch you in the face with random crits. Stimpaks become currency of their own eventually and super stimpaks are the deadliest weapon in the game.

If you haven't played Fallout 2 from start to finish, you should have your man card and your gamer card taken away and burned while you are forced to watch.

The one thing that drives me mad with Fallout games is that you basically have to play them by spoilers unless you want to miss out on a whole lot of rewards due to quests not having a proper flowchart.

For example, take the FO NV quest There Stands the Grass in Vault 22.

If you explore Vault 22 before finding the mission (which is very likely, as Vault 22 is actually between Goodsprings and the base), you keep finding Keely's notes but Keely isn't in the cave. You can however download the research data anyways. If you then find the quest, you have the option of turning in the data immediately, thus instantly ending the quest poorly, or you can return to Vault 22, help Keely destroy everything and finish the quest with another poor reward, because for some reason the data you downloaded earlier disappears from your pipboy.

Here's how the quest goes down if you accept it first, then raid Vault 22
1. Accept mission for data
2. Accept side mission to find Keely
3. Get the data
4. Find keely, agree to destroy everything
5. burn the spores
6. return to keely, convince her to not have you erase the data with a 70 science check
7. return to camp, get rewards for both.

6 did not appear for me. Because the data suddenly stopped existing. I also could not download it again from the terminal.

It makes no sense that you can get the data, but Keely isn't in the cave (yet her notes are all over the place). And FO3 and NV have quite a few missions that simply won't work out if you just stumble across them and do them in reverse.
Are you playing with the unofficial patch? While I'm not 100% sure this is the case here, but the unofficial patches for most Bethesda games do fix things like these. I know that the unofficial Skyrim patches fix a bunch of similar things.

Ok, I'll put FO2 in my queue. But it's behind Witcher3, GTAV, DAII and some other ones =( I probably won't get to it until long after FO4 comes out.
