How well does it do w/ teaching you all the stuff you're doing, about the crops, etc.

I would say probably fair. I think most of the fun is bumbling about making mistakes though :D

Server friend decided life was too difficult, so we started over on a custom map with 20 million each. Here's me after carefully loading some front lifter attachments into the back of my new truck.
20191202210901_1.jpg

The map is pleasant valley, and it is mostly just big and flat. A bit like oklahoma. The north bits are nicer and I built a house and barn and a giant farmer shed.
20191202213121_1.jpg

The landscaping stuff was super broken though. There was like a huge cliff off the front of the shed, and I could only do so much because of the trees. So I chopped 2 down and loaded the wood on a truck. This took FOREVER

I tried to take it to a sell point but none of them were interested. Eventually I figured out the sawmill thing but not before I had scattered logs over half the map. At one point I just decided to push the trees into the river, but I got too close to the edge.

If you don't want to outright cheat but still want easy money you can abuse the buy/sell land mechanics. The price for land is the same for both buying and selling and doesn't factor in the state of the crops. Let the AI plant & fertilize and buy the plot when ready to harvest, even if you have to take out loans. Harvest/sell crops then sell the land back for the same price as you bought it. Way more money that way than contracting to harvest for the AI owner. A lot of times the AI is lazy and won't plow or lime their fields so the yields might be lower but still it's easy money, especially if your combine is sitting idle waiting on your own fields.

There are people with over 10,000 hours in this game on the steam reviews for it.

Its not great but not terrible.

One thing that is terrible, the stick / wheel support. I dug a flight stick out of the depths of a closet and hooked it up. The tiniest registered motion results in your vehicle spearing sideways off the road into the nearest tree.

It really looks like whoever programmed it just hooked up a single random stick and checked to make sure it moved the front wheels and called it good. Instead of analog move amount == steering wheel position, there's this extra acceleration for the wheel moving towards the target position. Luckily at 200% that is pretty fast.

They also really screwed up the deadzones. Normally a deadzone is an area around the neutral position that is at rest, so you don't get constant tiny movements. In this game if you set 10%, then when you reach the edge of the deadzone, 10% movement is immediately applied instead of 1% the way it should be. So if you carefully move the analog you get nothing nothing nothing BOOM instant snap sideways.

I ended up using this guide Steam Community :: Guide :: Adjusting joystick sensitivity & curves for any joystick. with two profiles bound to a couple of really weird buttons I never use. One is for high speed driving, the other for slow maneuvering / parking type stuff. The high speed profile barely allows any turning at all.

I am poor right now (long story, paypal assgoblinry) and very unwisely just impulse purchased farm sim 25.

I'll let you know how it is (downloading), but I watched a few streams from Cleetus and Waffle and such and it looks really cool. Hope my potato pc can run it ok.

So my first few hours were not auspicious. I am doing the minimum possible start, with 100 grand and no land or equipment. I spent a good hour trying to figure out how to turn the GPS lines on with no luck.

20241113113541_1.jpg

My first contract was weeding, and the map that shows weeds is busted. So I had no way to see where I had been before. The weeds were tiny and impossible to see so I had to just drive around randomly for half an hour to get the last 3 %. I've been asleep all day but I'll hit it hard overnight.

As for what has changed, most of that I saw in streams. Tornados are the new weather thing, new "asian" map, rice farming, mushrooms, built in GPS stuff (though not as authetic as the mod). Runs really good on my potato pc! (i5 1080)

Waffle was saying that traffic will overtake now too, but I haven't seen it. I remember in past games getting horribly tangled up in cars.

I'm mainly interested in cotton farming, but I'm going to wait till I have a decent amount of cash built up to start. The equipment for that is a cool million at least.

Having fun! I've just been doing contracts and drinking beer.

Holding H down (for a long time) gets you the GPS menu, lumped in with the AI worker stuff. It is much more user friendly than the real thing (I've programmed many a GPS on tractors for local farmers doing circular fields).
20241113185258_1.jpg

I've made about 20 grand doing contracts for fertilizing, hoeing, and lucked out on a harvest contract that was right across the road from the farm shoppe, so no need to worry about hauling the header etc.

There are skinny little tractors that are safe to drive in crops I guess

I made myself asianish looking.

On the GPS stuff, they have this annoying "headlands" concept that you can't turn off. Basically you plow around the outside edge to give you room to turn. It matches real life, but in the game is a bit annoying. If you crash into a schoolbus from turning in the road who cares! It's a vidyagame!

You can grow rice and the soil deforms when you drive over it. But I'm a sucker for these types of games so I guess I'll be buying it lol.

I hit my first bugged contract. I should have known something was wrong as it was 20 grand for harvesting a fairly small field of oats or something. When I finished the bar was stuck at 20%.

Havin fun so far! A friend picked the game up ... yesterday maybe? And we've been just playing peer-to-peer as they make you buy another copy to do a dedicated server.
20241115124600_1.jpg

In my single player mode I thought I was doing the most difficult start; 100 grand with no equipment or land. There is however a more difficult start where you begin a million in debt, with only 100 grand and nothing else. Almost like you blew 900k on blackjack & hookers and now have just the 100 left.
20241116033425_1.jpg

My friend running the peer-to-peer started us that way but we quickly realized we were getting nowhere with that, so he made an extra farm that has a government subsidy cheat on it and builds up cash really fast, and we can take loans from that instead of Roth's bank of farmland.
20241115195647_1.jpg

I'm going to try a spinach -> greenbean rotation as the beans are nitrogen fixing. I don't know how long they grow or anything yet though. I bought a field that had spinach in it and it was bugged and just sat there sort of frozen in time for months till we finally gave up on it. The above is the 600k monster that harvests spinach, which I've yet to use.

Here's one of the factory kind of things you can get. This is the most ghetto version, really just a shed. This one does canning and jarring so I can do like cans of green beans and bags of spinach.
20241116044741_1.jpg

Also a handy place to store my bike :emoji_laughing:
Back in FS19 there was this crazy German mod that would do all this stuff, and I think the makers of the game really liked it and so put it in for 22. It was rather buggy then, but hoping it works a bit better this time.
20241116044551_1.jpg

I noticed that there's no malting or wine barrel stuff. Even though you can grow barley and grapes and taters. I'd love to make hooch or turn taters into cossack loopy juice. The old FS19 mod had corn whiskey.
