Ok so I went back and put in some more work on the FFX cid mission, and finally beat it. The key to victory? Stacking the hell out of heals. I went with 2.5 healers on the team, and a heavy regen roaming warrior... as well as kept loading until I had a bunch of luck and the boss rarely countered with haste. I also had to kick Tidus off the team, even though I have a SSB for him, and bring in a Lulu just because she can dps from the back row, lowering the overall physical damage the team takes. It's surprising I had so much trouble with this boss, because my FF10 synergy is actually extremely high (though I couldn't really use any of the unique soulbreaks for the realm except one because... none of the units could fit on the team).
So anyway, Guardian Beast died to the following team:
Paine -- Banishing Strike, Saint's Cross -- no SB
Lulu -- Waterja, Fireja -- shared medica SB
Yuna -- Diaga, Curaga -- +resist SB
Wakka -- Magic Breakdown, Full Break -- no SB
Braska -- Curaja, Protectga -- shared medica SB
RW: Mighty Guard (shell, haste, heavy regen)
After researching online, I found out his aoe slow is only attached to his tail swipe on a phase transition, so I had to hold off on using mighty guard until after 71%, which meant it was a total crapshoot on whether his mana breath in phase 1 killed someone with no magic mitigation up yet (this took multiple reloads to get right). Once I made it to P2 with no deaths, and got up mighty guard to cancel out his slow, it smoothed out some. Yuna had to switch from dps'ing with diaga to full on second healer from P2 until the end due to the damage rampup. Lulu also helped out with the occasional shared medica.
Once I made it to P3, it almost felt like I stalled out, with my entire team too busy re-applying buffs/debuffs, and spamming all the healing possible to stay alive. I spent multiple rounds with him at like 15% life, but I was too busy scrambling to live to actually fight back. Eventually, Paine and Lulu found time to land a few more attacks, which finished the fight.
Like I said, I don't even know why I felt like this was such a mountain to climb, especially when like 8/10 slots were synergy items. Maybe I was doing something seriously wrong, but hey, the cid mission is complete, so whatever!
