This is covered somewhere within FF7 I thought, though its been years. Cloud grew up always imagining he'd be the greatest soldier, famous and known everywhere, telling all his family/friends/Tifa that he'd come back with that renown. In reality, he sucked at it and became just generic helmet guard A of Shinra, escorting Zack & Sephiroth to explore why a reactor was on the fritz.

He heard a lot of stories from Zack while they traveled around, and after Sephiroth went crazy/hurt Tifa really badly Cloud went a bit nuts. He reinvented himself in his mind to cope with the failure of his goals enough so that he actually believed it to be true. Tifa went along with it at first cause they needed his help, but later on calls his bullshit and helps him come to terms with it.

Thats what I remember of it, at least.

Yeah, I just wondered if there was a "deeper" plot meaning to it all...

I always interpreted it as Cloud not truly knowing the truth- the remake seems to indicate this with "questions" triggering his PTSD - Tifa also did not really know what happened to him after the reactor - nor did she herself have any real info on what he was doing up until the time he was at the reactor - I need to re watch the stuff- Tifa only started to be like "WTF dude" when Cloud started recounting the reactor events /as/ Zack - and she was like no bro, that was the black haired hot stuff- but she also did not /question/ much stuff to start because yeah she needed another dude to help blow stuff up... Also.. I think its funny that in ff7 it made the mako reactor to be LONG AGO with young jail bait hat wearing Tifa- but really it is not that that long ago.

Also the entire thing where jhenovah babies can make clones of themselves... Angeal the clones where all difigured and monster like...but Sepheroth makes perfect clones? or what that only with the use of some jhenovah cells.

Also CrisisCore really was made to flesh out /who/ was Zack - and a better and more detailed explanation and depiction of the mako reactor and mansion events... but they got SUPER side tracked with the back story back story - it was cool that they gave us solid and good information on the creation of Sepheroth... and Angeal...and Genises - they were Jehnovah cells used to alter a pregnant or create a pregnancy - while Zack and Cloud were experiments in just infusing jhenovah stuff into a grown human - soldier person. I guess what Hojo did not know is that Angeal gave or whatever Zack cells or whatever to make him into a "super" soldier. What is funny is its like the story people created the entire story of CrisisCore and then the people came in and was like "Dude... The Mako Reactor...the Mansion events and journey to and ending at midgar." so they just shoe horn that in there... like "HUNTING DOWN GENSIS GATTA GET THIS DUDE...oh, hold on...Makeo reactor....OKAY BACK TO ACTIO...oh...wait...no, thats not how that happened...okay MANSION STUFF!....Okay NOW back to-NO WAIT... Okay... TRAVEL TO MIDGAR, TAKE A PIT STOP, leave cloud in the bushes GO KILL (but not....) Gensis- okay NOW go back and pick up cloud out of the shrubbery and drag his drugged out self behind another rock-- kill a billion shinra soldiers, but still get overwhelmed.

So yeah...thats where Cloud wakes up...OD'ed on mako and riddled with alien cells, surrounded by a shitton of dead soldiers and a big ass buster sword.. so yeah he takes the sword, and that is the only thing his memory has to latch on to, thus starting the assumption of Zack- also there is hints at cross-contamination of stuff during the mansion mako tubes- and that's why some of Zacks memories are into Cloud brain.

I also never really got why Sepherotih a creation of Jhenova is more powerful than Jhenova...the same as to why cloud would be? But if Sepheroth is so powerful that he corrupted the lifestream himself and effected the entire world through new life (kids) - aka Advent Children... and all it took was a little glop of Jhenova to resurrect Sepheroth - just thing what would happen if Genisis gets out of whatever...he is a whole lotta cells that Sepheroth could use for who knows what- and that may be whats going on with remake.

Hojo genetically modifying his own son while the baby was still baking in his wife's oven is why Sephiroth is the Jenova messiah.

Yeah the Cloud stuff was just explained as he had a mental breakdown after his hometown/mother were killed, being a science experiment for 5 years, having mako poisoning from the science experiment, then seeing Zack die who saved him, then seeing Tifa was still alive and having to save face about his failures.

Tifa finds Cloud collapsed at the Sector 7 station and knows there's something up, not speaking out because she's worried about him and her own memory is fuzzy anyway since Sephrioth badly wounded her when it all went down.

I wonder if they'll add Sephrioth fucking with him as a factor. The effect when Sephrioth is trying to control Cloud and when Cloud blocks out references to his lie (Aerith naming Zack, Hojo saying he wasn't a soldier) are the same. Perhaps Sephrioth wanted Zack as his lead clone and since he was dead, Cloud was the next best thing.

Now Zack is alive, perhaps we will see Zack as a Sephrioth Clone and Cloud will be fucked with by future Sephrioth instead.

In original FF7 the Shinra incident was Jenova herself breaking out of containment and shapeshifting into Sephiroth. Remake FF7 has two sephiroth copies break in, one shapeshifts into a Jenova creature and Red XIII even states that it's an illusion.

Clone isn't the best word for it but crappy 90s translations and all. In the original there was only 12 known tattooed test subjects injected with jenova's cells, Zack and Cloud were experimented on later and had no numbers. But the remake has shown a 49 and we can presume all future bosses will be sephiroth copies instead of jenova herself.

That's compatible with this version though, there's nothing to say that's not how it happened in the original.

Actually since Cloud's cell is open after Jenova escapes, I always speculated that Cloud freed Jenova when everyone was asleep without remembering.

Think we'll see Genesis get involved in this new FF7 series? Always expected him to be the villain of an eventual FF7-2. IIRC he isn't actually defeated in CC, and shows up in the post-credits scene of Dirge of Cerberus, so he's still around somewhere. It's a big loose end to have this lunatic who is as powerful as Sephiroth running around.

Hojo mentioned trying to breed Aerith with a G Soldier.

Max's face/reaction when One Winged Angel started playing = $$
Yea, it was fun watching him finish the game and then his reaction to it all afterwards. He is firmly in the camp that is excited by the changes in Remake and what they could lead to in the followups, vs. the "purists" who hated the ending and just wanted an up to date 1 to 1 version of the original. I like his thought that Aerith probably knows she has to die to save the planet, and the emotional impact that could lead too (like a certain moment in Made In Abyss, if anyone remembers -that- kick in the feels).

Sounds like FF10 and Yuna. That's one of the reasons why I think FF10 is the best FF game, because of the emotional impact of that storyline. In the end Yuna is saved but you lose two other party members to do it.

He's turned into a total shill for anything he's been playing within the past few years. Guess some of his revenue streams must've dried up.

pew pew Reg laser beams?

I agree with what he said after finishing, I'm all for the different storyline. I don't want the Resident Evil remakes, I want a reimagining which is exactly what we're getting. The chapter 16-18 stuff opens the door to any possibilities now, since Sephiroth knows that killing Aerith was the beginning of the end for him. Was talking with a friend of mine who had just beaten the game and the whole bit with the alternate past timeline with Zack led me to the same conclusion Max came to - Zack and potentially Biggs and Jessie will be a second party in part two, and something I didn't even think of that he compared it to was Laguna in FF8 (by far the best parts of that game). Now how will the splinter past end up mattering? Who knows. They handled part 1 pretty well so hopefully it doesn't venture too far into left field or do something stupid.

I imagine a better name for the game would be FF7-2. Besides, the story already ventured into being stupid. Cloud being able to resist Sephiroth's will makes his schizophrenia with amnesia completely pointless. Zack possibly being alive throws a wet towel on the love triangle. They made Hojo some cartoonish villain already. The Turks are already assassins with "feels", this "remake" is a fan fiction that went full retard by the end of it.
