12 is the first one I actually played start to finish since 7. Haven't played 13-2 or 13-3 though, got all the way to right near the end of 10 twice and just got sick of it.
I keep hoping for a 12 HD reprint. I can just emulate it, but the emulation has some errors I've never been able to work out.

Never did beat it.

If you can catch 13-2 on sale on Steam, its really not a bad FF title. Its actually surprising how decent it is, especially in the face of 13's suckitude.

Still waiting on 13-3 to come to Steam to play it.

How's that Type 0 bloody action game? Suppose I should have something lined up for more reason to get a ps4...or just the MMO ff as I am downloading its demo now on my ps3

It seems interesting, I just haven't been able to get into it myself. The FF15 demo is very playable, and I can't wait for that to release. I imagine that will be viewed by and large as a very successful title in the franchise once its finished and releases.

So...in 15, you do more than drive around with your emo fanbois killing wildlife? then jump into a crazy convoluted crazy world politico anime standard craziness?

Yeah, I thought the FFXV demo was pretty cool. I got bored of FF Type 0 about 20 hours in.

Seriously though, I didn't play the whole demo, but I played it enough to say that combat system is gonna be pretty goddamn awesome.

I really think its more about technical capabilities than it is necessarily visual styles. If you're churning out a game in RPG maker, then RPG maker style combat is acceptable. If you're turning out a game that looks like Square Enix in 2015 made it, it needs to play that way as well.

Pretty graphics are nice and all, but having to sit and watch a 15 to 30 second attack animation play out after slapping a single button once a half minute simply isn't entertaining any more to a lot of people.

FF 13's combat was pretty awful, but 13-2 fixed a lot of the problems with it. I couldn't believe it when it happened, but I actually played 13-2 all the way to the end. I didn't 100% it and clear all the special high level bosses you can do by going back into the zones and all that, but I did play it from start to finish and enjoyed the shit out of it.
13, 13-2, and 13-3 all had the worst combat systems in the entire franchise. Pokemon was ok in 13-2 until you realized chocobos were the kings of everything. 13-3 was just laughable. What really bugged me about 13 was there wasn't really any decision making needed beyond switching paradigms, just auto-attack. If they put that auto-attack bullshit into VII I will be so pissed.

Gonna have to disagree with you that 13-2's combat was bad.

I enjoyed that entire game from start to finish. I was shocked, literally shocked, that I enjoyed it, too.

13 is completely shit though.

Haven't played 13-3. Want to after 13-2 though.

All 3 Final Fantasy XIII's essentially used the same combat system with slight modifications. It was actually phenomenal in XIII-1 but the problem was you could simply autoattack your way through the first three fourths of the game and not really experience it. It was solid in XIII-2 but with the Pokemon aspect it was a lot more limited. And as said above, Chocobos kicked everything else's ass so hard it wasn't worth using any other monsters. The combat system fell apart on Lightning Returns because you only had one character for 90% of the game and the combat system was designed around a party chaining attacks together for synergy. With just Lightning the combat system just didn't work well.

I actually Platinumed all 3 XIII games. But none of them were my favorite. The first was decent, middle of the pack, Final Fantasy. XIII-2 was decent as well but the whole timeline thing got so convoluted that I ended up buying the strategy guide just to figure out what the fuck I was supposed to be doing next. Lightning Returns was crap. I've said this before but Lightning is not a likable character and having her bear the entire game on her shoulders was simply asking too much for a character like Lightning.

X and X-2 have always been polarizing it seems. Even back when they were new. People either love X or they hate it. There seems to be almost no in-between. Personally I loved them and rank them among my favorites of all time. I thought the story was decent and I could overlook the whining from Tidus. Ultimately I found Tidus was easier to relate to than most FF characters. I mean people love Cloud or Auron because they're badasses but you really can't relate to them. Tidus is an "everyman" and I think that turns people off since he isn't a typical Final Fantasy badass. But, yes, he does tend to whine a bit and the "laughing" scene in X was among the worst of any Final Fantasy game. Despite that though I still rank X as one of my favorites. It was the last Final Fantasy that did a "traditional" JRPG combat system with a twist. It had great characters and a solid story. Even X-2 was great for me once you get past all the "girl power" stuff. But again, X is a love it or hate it game. There is almost no one who says that X was mediocre.

I was kind of excited for this but now I'm realizing that with a changed story, different combat, and every character now looking like a faggy anime character, I can't really think of a reason I'd play this instead of just playing the original again.

I don't recall using the monsters much in 13-2 except as a heal bot or something. I played it last fall so my memory might be failing me. I know I didn't use chocobos that much though.

13 & 13-2 combat wasn't that bad besides the whole auto attack most of the game. Doing the whole rav/rav/com to quickly stagger an enemy, then switching to rav/com/com while you just juggle the mob in the air got a little dull. Felt like they could easily keep a 13/13-2 style of battles (aka flashy and characters move fluently) but still keep the whole attack/magic/special/item ATB from 7.

Crisis Core was like that, but it was 1 character and you could do it...or well you get your auto mode com control characters like the recent ones- your party just becomes stats and a set of rules/moves - and you could sploit CC so much in combat once you realized everything was standard turn based - regardless of running around etc freely - except your block...blocking was active and didn't change anything really in timing...so you sit there blocking, take a hit blocked- hit hit hit, or whatever in-between pressing block again right before getting hit, then beat up bad guys again... and 1 v 1 or 1 v 2 in CC was gimpy once you do this...the game however is much more fun if you don't :)

I think there's definitely something between ATB, what we had in 13 / 13-2, and then what exists in games like Star Ocean and Tales Of.... Being able to set up and customize party AI is really cool as long as it is flexible and meaningful. Simple stuff like "attack," "attack a little less," or "defend" don't really offer a ton of depth. Nice IF THEN set ups and unlocking more advanced AI is a sort of progression both of character skill and player skill in coming up with bad ass teammates. Then even if you're concentrating on your main character you feel somewhat invested in your auto battle partners. Maybe I'm just crazy though.

I used a healer, debuffer and buffer chocobo I think and it just trivialized everything. Sometimes I used a magic casting monster to raise the meter but that was it.

I don't know how you think auto-attack could be considered good. I used it the entire game literally from start to end

You'll be in for a rude awakening. Yes, 13-2 was fun. I tried to like 13-3. Even bought the collectors edition and shit like that. I play it for like an hour and I feel like I'm being rushed too much and just gave up. It doesn't logically make sense as well as 13-2 did. And it seems extremely difficult to do all of the side quests. Not because the quests themselves are hard, just because you don't have time to do them because the games clock is always moving forward.

Aside from that, I wasn't really able to get into the combat system in 13-3. I made (what I thought) were good item/weapon setups to swap between, but they never made sense in actual practice. Maybe I need to sit down and really think about the game to enjoy it more, but my mind wasn't there when it first came out.

Am disappoint.

I only got to the 4th area in the game IIRC, I might replay it soon though - currently working through the FFX remaster.

I went all-in for the XIII-2 collectors edition too.

Well I think if you reread your post, you can see why you auto attacked the entire game and therefore found it boring!

I didn't use the chocobos at all. I used some healer monster and then Serah and like one of the other non monster characters or some shit. I'll have to reload the game just to remind myself who it was, but I definitely didn't just auto attack the entire game as a result.

I liked the story, the combat, basically the whole package. I mean I haven't beaten a FF since 7, except for that one. Didn't hurt that the main story line was beatable in under 40 hours as well, though.

FFX did a decent enough job at hiding the tunnel design with enough side content. FFXIII they didn't even bother, I played through it only once with no extras. I did last longer in FFXIII-2 than FFVIII but still didn't finish either. Didn't bother with the 3rd one.

7 and 10 hold up better than any of those games, even Tactics holds up today and has great replayability due to the JP scroll glitch.
