I know this game is getting a lot of traction lately but idk how anyone can sit through this giant cutscene mmo that occasionally has gameplay. I trudged through to level 50 only to realize I needed to do a 100 step quest chain to get to the first xpac.

For me I rather play the game that way compared to WoW where you get a disjointed journey if you play to catch up in the newest expansion.
It's for many a mmo to enjoy the journey and then arrive at the normal mmo grind at the end. But it's not for everyone so if you dont enjoy it play something else.

i think the real final fantasy tour de force is when you don't feel a deep need to catch up rapidly. do an hour or two of story, do a few roulettes, maybe do some side quests. and go to bed at night knowing that when you wake up, the game is there for you again to enjoy.
become attached to aspects of the game, or characters if you like. rabbit hole down some weird avenue of the game if you find it interesting.

Took me two months to go from beating ARR to entering Heavensward.
But this isn't WoW. FFXIV is not entirely about hitting the level cap.

I also skipped many of the initial cutscenes and read the journal entry, that was enough for me. Watching them now a bit more in HS. I’d happily skip them just for the action again and not think twice about it.

I don't want to be mean, but you have to realize that out of all the MMO players out there it was Asmongold that sat through all of ARR 2.0 and read the text out loud. And it looks like the story elements plus cutscenes enhanced his enjoyment of the raids, especially "The Binding Coils of Bahamut". The only things you heard from him in T12/T13 was "that's badass" ... when he was watching the cutscenes.
I'm not making this shit up:
FFXIV is a Final Fantasy game first and an MMO second. If you play it like WoW you just burn out. We tend to call that "you got filtered". Not meant to be mean. Many such cases.
