Don't role play myself, but I usually create an alt or two on role play servers in whatever game I'm trying. Some of the players are very good and can add greatly to the experience.

The best were the orc and goblin role players in Warhammer. They were hilarious.

My guess is the character models. They have the best in the business as well as animations.
I guess this is why so many people are essentially paying a monthly fee to play, "Dress-up Barbie". Which would also explain why Glamour is treated as a character advancement in its own right and tucked away behind so many blatant timesinks.

Possibly, you have the same thing in SWTOR basically... a lot of dress up and roleplaying. Kind of funny that between SWTOR and FFXIV, you could make the argument that it's really what most gamers what given how successful both are doing and it's a huge part of both of them.

FFXIV is now one year old today I think, and still commands a sub fee. Don't think there's any games from a year ago that can boast that other than WoW and EvE... oh and that other dress-up game FFXI.

Meanwhile, hardcore is taking an economic beating as well as sandbox. Go figure.

Well I can't speak for everyone but I'm still subbed because, unlike every other mmo i've ever played, ffxiv has legitly added actual content every 3 months like they initially promised. And it's real, new content, like completely new dungeons, new 3d modeled enemies and gear, new ways to advance. I feel like my sub is actually going towards something. I seriously hope some dev isn't looking at ffxiv's success and thinking 'MUST ADD GLAMOUR TO MY SHITTY GAME'

I played FFXI for a long time and I don't ever think my character's appearance was a motivation to be honest, it was always about squeezing that extra point of strength in to a gear swap or building that perfect evasion set for soloing NMs. Hell, for most of the time I played him my Nin looked awful in O-Hat, Scorp Harness, and Haidate. In FFXIV though I have to admit I found myself overly concerned with appearance. I never really felt my character was growing significantly stronger in 14 despite iLevel increases because so much of the content is locked away behind level caps and level syncs so you're significantly gimped regardless of how geared you are. I guess I felt if my appearance at least changed something must be improving even if I didn't technically see much of an improvement.

For at least the first four years, there wasn't much choice in the matter in how a player looked in FFXI. Not sure when you played but there wasn't any type of wardrobe system at all during that time so of course you couldn't have your character's appearance as a motivating factor as Mithra with the red tinted hair instead of blue. The whole point back then regarding appearance was AF for most people; you wanted the swanky Red Mage pimp hat look or the E-bow for your Archer. It was looks but those items happened to be pretty important because they were the best for those jobs. Relic weapons were rarely seen by anyone, even after several years of playing. Even then someone would finally see someone with a relic and say"Oh nice stats! But it's ugly though. I like the looks of mine better."

In FFXIV you don't have that problem because you can have something like an Allagan's sword/shield and make it look like a Level 1 sword and board combo (which I've seen a few do). The whole point is regarding player customization, freedom and feel in the community. It even plays a much larger role when you consider that unlike most other mmos where people have 3+ alts with extremely varying looks/races, this game has very few people bother with them because their main character is already their alt as well, so whatever face/look you put in it is the one you always see when you see someone's name. The only way you really bother to change your looks is with your clothes (glamours) for the most part or with a minimal visit to the Barbershop.

A lot of people will type on a forum "I don't care about how something looks, I want blah blah blah gameplay and I'll sub" and then someone makes a game that has lots of that blah blah blah and no one wants to play it because they can't get past how fugly it is. The indiescape is filled (and still filling) with games that fit that bill; ugly with dated-looking graphics yet has fantastic ideas and decent gameplay. This is fine for solo/single player type Humble Bundle games but a big no-no for MMOs and the companies know that. It's why a lot of them spend so much time on graphics, backgrounds, emotes because they know ultimately that's what sells the boxes.

EQN is shaping up to be feature rich, but you can tell they know most people care about graphical detail and how they want their character to look as well like SE does.

Best thing about this game is that your character turns their head to look at what you are targeting, this is very noticable and cool on healers. And the rest of the game is pretty good except the story.

The raiding was pretty good when turns 6-9 came out, very tightly tuned even with the best gear possible. Suprisingly there was and still is a good presence of high end raiding guilds too. DnT was our major competition in MOD and them bros knocked out a couple of WF on Gilga.

The Zenith weapon was the nail in the coffin for me, I dont have that kind of time but its as close to an EQ epic as you are going to get.

Is there a rerolled guild left on Gilg to speak of or have most people drifted off to other guilds/other servers?

ISIS is dead as far as I know. Our Arab heritage didnt last.

Join Death and Taxes (DnT). Im on a different project right now, so I cant play much. But last I was online, an officer was talking to me about joining and I only have 3 classes completed. They are a pretty solid raid guild, have groups that run other content, and have a few members that are leaders in American Steak Theory - the Hunt Group. If you're not a role player, and you arent a LGBT, DNT is the place to be. That is if you dont have the social skills of a recluse.

I make rerolled a daily part of my internet life. If that doesn't vouch for my social skills...

I'll check DnT out, thank you.

Lol & WTF...

First time in Tam Tara as a Tank (Gladiator 22), I'm wearing green and pink drops from GC and runs on other classes, so I'm in good shape.

Every single pull - 2, 3, or 4 mobs, I mark one > shield lob and barely get in a flash, and the Conjurer (mid-30s-synch) startsspammingMedica, and I've hardly taken a scratch. Of course I lose aggro, he runs away, so I run over and drain my mana trying to flash the mobs off him. Meanwhile the DPS are still attacking the marked mob, so I lose aggro on that one too. I ask the Conjurer to please not spam Medica when everyone is at full heath > ignored. We complete with no deaths of course, but trying to actually "tank" the run was a complete waste of time, except for the bosses. No surprise that some new tanks give up in disgust, and a rude awakening for me since I usually play healers.

Every once in awhile, you're going to meet that a-hole that no matter what you say or how fucking civil you say it, is going to want to pull hate to show how little his penis isn't be it DPS or Heals. Sometimes they just like fucking with you while you tank.

In those spots, you will never, ever keep hate from them; at least initially.

In your example above, skip Shield Lob. Just run in like Leroy and do Flash on everything, then Shield Lob on #1 (usually 1 DPS will pay attention). Wait until the phallically challenged guy blows his load (trinkets/specials/buffs) and pulls hate the first time, then you cast your single target taunt on the mob that's running in his direction, which puts you back at the top of the Hate chart and him not able to do much for awhile. Do another Flash, and then repeat your normal rotation.

The same thing happens in TOR to me as a Shield Tech; fucking Troglodyte Maras leap in thinking they are tanks with Heavy Armor instead of glorified WoW Rogues wearing Medium armor and lightsabers and want to tank the Champ mobs instead of hitting the weak or Strong/White mobs first. I just let them blow their trinkets/cooldowns andthen tauntthe mobs off, then I laugh at them while they wait until it comes back.

Mobs never actually hit them anymore and they look impotent as ever.

If the above sounds too suggestive, I'm am actually watching "Tracy, I Love You" while writing this.

Well he may have been trolling me, but wasn't quite sure since he typed "good job" at the end of the run. Heh, maybe that just confirms it =)

Unfortunately no provoke in Tam Tara (synchs to 19, 'voke is 22), and wouldn't have helped because he was getting multiples on him with his spam. Anyway, still highly annoying, hope I don't see too much of it.

If he was DPS I probably would have let him die, even though I really hate doing that when I'm healing instead; but this guy had me pretty pissed off, so who knows. =P

edit: sorry, didn't get the "Tracy" reference?

To be fair, if everyone was on full health he shouldn't have been pulling hate with Medica. Sure, if he used it right off the pull he'd be pulling the same amount of hate as if he'd just been using a Cure. The aggro in FFXIV is pretty badly handled anyway though. For example, if I throw a Regen on an out of combat tank and then he engages a group of mobs I will often pick up aggro on the ones he isn't directly tanking because of the enmity generation caused by the healing over time. This used to cause issues in CT on the last boss when the giants would often run over to another group because one of their healers still had a regen running on the MT.

Overheal generates threat, same amount as normal healing. This is why Medica is such a shitty spell if you use it poorly, it generates a fuckton of threat. Also why you spam medica even with everyone at full health to get gold reward on hunts(assuming you're in a group and do need to tag the mob once with a dmg spell).

Been playing this for like 2weeks, still have a lot of shit to do. I advanced the main story decently but still not on Ramuh step(though I'm on the prereqs for it), Hildebrand I've done a bit but not everything, Moogle deliveries I still have 3 to do, I've done every 4man dungeons which was quite a lot, done Labyrinth but not ST yet. Lots of really cool stuff was added and there's a lot of shit to do, plus I spent a lot of time leveling classes too. Got my Dragoon from 20 to 34 for Blood for Blood, Archer from 4 to 34 for Quelling Strikes, Paladin from 9 to 30 just for Paladin soul(fuck this class though it sucks), Black Mage from 26 to 50 and in the process of doing the relic quest on it, Warrior from 20 to 35 and will level that to 50 next.

Game's just really nice, looking forward to next patch with personal housing and the patch after hopefully in about a month with Ninja. Though from the looks of it, good thing I picked up the game earlier than the Ninja release since it looks like you'll need to advance the story quest decently to unlock it(the trainer NPC only appears during the Leviathan quest, not sure if you'll be able to unlock the class/job without doing these quests, which means having a 50 and having done a lot of the story quests).

Really wish they made it so you could queue with a Chocobo out too, shit's so annoying when I queue with a DPS class since I can't use my chocobo to farm shit for the entire time.
