15-37 Culinary and 26-50 Blacksmith today, not a bad haul. Finish burning my leves tomorrow and let them build up over the work weeks.

Did my first ST last night. The place seems way way easier than LotA, which seems backwards to me but whatever, i'll take it.

Yeah that's why you never go back to LotA, it's harder and gives shit loot and takes longer. ST is just way better for casual raiding and since 2.4 it's basically the place to go to for gearing up, until whenever they make hunts good again. Probably not before 2.5 though, which will have the 3rd part of Crystal Tower, so that might still be better than hunts since it'll most likely drop i120 stuff+sands/oil/UAT equivalents(carbontwine and such, forgot).

Finished gearing my ninja yesterday, or well, gearing with the easy stuff. I still need to buy another soldiery ring to be really done but i108, i110 soldiery gear in every slot other than the 2nd ring which is still an i90 ring. Pulling close to 400DPS on dummy and 350-380 in ST on bosses(well some bosses, kinda depends if I get frozen for 5minutes and shit obviously). Really nice class.

Don't forget that the free login weekend is in effect. I've been playing again since the release of 2.4 and enjoying my time; just grinding away on the books for my Animus weapon and making gil. Looking forward to trying out Rogue eventually but at the moment I wanna crank through these books.

I've never done any of the Animus books, Do you have to have the relevant Atma weapon equipped or can you switch class while you do them ? Want to do my Scholar, which is a pain grinding Fates etc on.

You need your Animus weapon equipped to do the books. For the dungeons, only need it equipped for the last boss(though better to just equip right away so you don't forget). You get the animus right away then you add stats on it by completing books. There's no FATE grinding on animus, or well, you can grind fates if you want while waiting for the specific ones you need for books, but technically books are 3 specific fates only, which can be easily done with any class, just a bunch of them spawn rarely so it's annoying as shit.

Thanks Pyros. Appreciate it.

edit : 'bought' my first book and I don't have an Animus weapon, just an Atma. Is this situation normal ?

Perfectly normal. It will stay an Atma as you complete books and add stats to your weapon. Once you complete all 9 books, you return to the North Shroud, talk to the NPC, and your Atma officially becomes an Animus (with new particle effect).

Oh my bad then, thought it was Animus right away, guess it stays Atma. You'll see special icons over the head of the mobs when you have the correct weapon equipped, similar to quest mobs and shit but it's a unique one. Books are fucking shit, they take fucking forever and there's so much shit to do with them. Do craft some spiritbinding gear too, cause you'll be killing 100mobs per book, with 9books, you can spiritbind like a set on each book if you also do a few fates to try to get the right ones to spawn. It should help slightly with the next step wallet rape.

I don't mind the books too much, but if they nerf them in the future to ease the requirements, I'd be okay with them just removing the "kill 100 mobs" part. It's tedious. Some of the FATE camping can be a pain too, there was a FATE I had to do in East Shroud that spawned once every few hours and had pushover mobs, so if you weren't actively camping it and noticed it soon after it spawned, you weren't gonna get gold.

Weird, I'm doing Scholar too and I actually prefer it for FATE grinding, to the point that when I upgraded my Omnilex from Zenith I purchased another one in case I wanted to farm up another set of atma down the road. SCH actually does fairly decent DPS, and the mobs are easy enough that your fairy healing you is sufficient.

FATE grindings bosses as SCH is kinda slow. Normal fates you can aoe shit down decently, but WHM does that a lot better. It's not optimal really, even though you literally can't die ever. Only stuff I can't solo well on my SCH are Peisteskin maps and A+ rank hunts. Both are 8man content though and I can actually solo some of them, just not all(fucking chimera peisteskin is autolose, but some others are a snoozefest). For bosses fates, a DPS class is a lot better, especially one without positionals like SMN, BLM or NIN, for trash fates, WHM is king, you just run around aggroing everything then you Holy 3-4times and clear the entire FATE at once.

Have you geared out Summoner ? cast three DoTs, move onto next mob, tank pet finishes mob off and keeps it off you. Constant pulls, one mob every 6 or 7 seconds and of course it's so good for tanking/DPSing Fate bosses.

Ah yeah, SMN would definitely be a FATE farming beast. My SMN is somewhat geared by virtue of me having mage gear, but I don't actively play it, so I was thinking in terms of the jobs I do play.
Anyone got a breakdown for the Damage/Desirability of the DPS classes currently?
If you're talking about raiding a lot of that is really just going to depend on the needs of a specific group unfortunately.

Can't speak for desirability, but roughly speaking (I'm not current on the numbers, everything I've read is relative):

Single Target - MNK >= NIN >= SMN/BLM >= DRG / BRD
AE - BLM > SMN > BRD > DRG > MNK/NIN

SMN AoE is weird, it's really good for up to 4 targets and garbage over that, so depends on the fight. Any "strong adds" fight is good, any "zerg adds" fight is terrible. BLM AoE is way beyond everything else, assuming you can stand still while aoeing. Also WHM actually aoes better than every other DPS class besides BLM, but you also lose all your mana so kinda depends on the fight. I feel BRD/DRG/NIN is about the same, NIN is pretty good for long sustained aoe phases, DRG better for short aoe phases with shit really packed, BRD is about in the middle. Monk is awful unless you perfect balance(3mins cd that you want to use for other stuff), in which cases it's pretty much the best aoe dps for like 10secs besides double flare BLM.

Mostly aoe isn't really a relevant metric and most people go with single target. I'd put BLM with BRD and DRG. DRG is also good on short fights, just ends up pretty bad over time. BLM is good on fights where you can stand still, which is like no fights, when you have to move a lot it drops a fuckton. Monk is slightly ahead of Ninja on a static boss on which they can get positionals but I'd say Ninja utility(Trick Attack specifically) is a bit better, though if you want 2 melee 2ranged, then monk/nin is what you want as the monk is still useful for the good mantra and the int debuff kinda. SMN/BRD for ranged utility are best, BRD dmg isn't as high as other DPS but the songs are insanely useful so you almost always want one, and SMN has combat rez so...

Overall though the differences are fairly minor and a good player of any class is more useful than a bad player of a "better" class, or even an average player. Better play a class you enjoy.

Yeah definitely the good player/bad player thing is massive in FFXIV. Some classes are much easier to play than others. Rarely see a Black Mage with less than good+ DPS and often see Bards with mediocre DPS. I'd agree with Pyros - understand what the play style of each class so you know what you are getting into. eg :

BLM - easy rotation, easy to put out top DPS single target or AE

Bard - harder to put out good DPS, mostly instant cast, ranged

Summoner - keep DoTs running, pets, work in small dmg dd with DoTs

Melee DPS is exponentially harder than most other MMOs to put out good DPS due to constantly changing positional requirements (Monk and Dragoon) plus FFXIV suffers more than most MMOs for fights being less melee friendly than ranged

Ninja has less positional requirements than Monk/Dragoon, puts out good DPS, intersting skills and rotations but is seriously paper

Any melee are just a ballache to heal. Farming raids 70%+ of DPS are Bards or BLM. Occasional Summoners because they are so slack.
