Alright, so I did a rhetoric grid for the ukraine thread. Here is the general template:
The troubling insight of the 1920's and the 1930's, was that this grid **cannot** account for so-called "Big Lie" communities. The grid above assumes having truth on your side is always a plus.
In terms of formal structure, what distinguishes a Big Lie community of statement makers? Answer: the Big Lie (whatever it is) functions as a null function that can be deployed to essentially mute either the Y or the X axis. Whenever the Big Lie is stated, either truth function, or moral function, is overruled within the group member, in order to immediately affirm (by moving toward) the Big Lie. This is the resulting grid structure, simplified and guess what I did. I added a Z axis:
If this Z axis exists (we only have one "point" depicted here...) then my previous rhetorical grid, though appealing, cannot account for all possible statement making communities although it does account for many.
- The Y axis is rational, and fact oriented. The X axis is the moral axis, and is more concerned with establishing ingroup-outgroup identity.
- Which axis is dominant depends on the group in question.
- The best statements are those in the top right quadrant. The worst are those in the left bottom.
- By best and worse, I simply mean which statements will make the best sense, and be the most rewarded statements, in that community.
- This is an abstract, purely ideal model of how to map the set of possible statements made by a given community of statement-makers. There are other devices for mapping statements that one can build.
