When I was in high school I took my now wife out on a date to an Italian restaurant and did not tip the waitress. I saw the waitress again when I went to buy pot from a dealer of mine as it was his baby's momma (surprise!), the dealer then proceeded to sell me a really small bag of shitty weed.

Lesson here is karma gets around, tip the person making 2.00$ an hour.

Pastor hate aside, the waitress who posted that wasn't even involved. She lied initially on reddit about being the actual waitress who served the Pastor, and now admits she has no clue if a tip was actually left or not. Apparently she's given an interview and follow up interviews over atConsumerist.com. This waiter chick is a classic attention whore. She probably has sharp knees too.

However I don't think the person serving you understands that it's just supposed to be a nice gesture of gratitude and not your responsibility to be their employer and pay them.

gratuity - "something given voluntarily or beyond obligation usually for some service; especially : tip"

No problem giving 20% or more for great service, 10% for meh service and walking out with no tip for crap service. Have even taken a tip back, crap service at a certain pancake chain. Waitress kept moaning about her job, her life, how her feet hurt, sat down uninvited with my wife and I to moan about her woes. Kept insisting I order something I didn't want (upsale) even though my order was made what should have been abundantly clear and in the end brought me the other item. Pointed out the order was wrong but made do, didn't complain about the rest though we both had wtf expressions when she had sat down next to me to recount her tales. She was new (had to hear all of this in her tales when just trying to place an order) left her a buck on the table for the atrocious service. Waitress followed us out to the parking lot and came up to the vehicle as we were leaving, I rolled down the window and she asked "Are you sure you don't want your dollar back?" very sarcastically. I said "Yes, thanks", took it from her and drove off enjoying her shocked expression.

If you're making "less than minimum wage" that's an issue to take up with your employer or don't take the job, its not always going to be big money nights with huge tips. I don't know about other areas but here if you don't make at least minimum wage from divided tips the employer (at least some if not all) pays you out of their take. Alternatively just bring good service and reap the rewards with the exception of the occasional person like this religious twat who aren't going to tip no matter. Though in truth I don't apply this logic to more upscale dining, this is strictly for the middle bracket of chain joints, which Applebees falls into and is typically the level of restaurants I've heard this line of complaint from.

That's my tangent on obligatory tipping not related to this case which is much shorter, don't be a religious nutter who is too cheap to tip and use your belief system to justify shitty attitudes and behavior. Your biblical christ didn't charge those he fed, so should you also eat for free? Maybe next time she can trade parables or scripture for her food (rolls eyes) Secondly I wouldn't want my receipts on the net either, but then I wouldn't be a nutter and leave stupid offensive crap like that.

I just think it's fucking absurd minimum wage laws don't apply and they get paid 3.50 an hour and on top of that have to pay taxes on tips.

Tax the poor. There's so many of them.

Mimimum wage laws do apply. The employer is supposed to make up the difference IF the server doesn't receive enough gratuity compensation (at least in NY State). The employee and/or employer usually sign statements effectively claiming the servers make "x" amount in tips. The little secret is servers actually do very well with cash tips because most of them only pay taxes on minimum wage, but take in a lot more.

You have abusers on both sides of the coin. Not all states are like NY, there are plenty where the "make up the difference" doesn't apply. And you do have servers that do what you state.

And certainly bartenders usually do very well. Of course, plying people with drugs that modify behavior and lower inhibitions may come into play

But then you have the vast majority of waitstaff that scrape by on whatever horseshit they're left with each day.

More and more restaurants are pooling tips and sharing it out equally, sometimes including host(ess) and busboys.

I envy nations that actually pay full wage, where tipping is actually reset back to its correct purpose (expressing gratitude for the service).

I tip very well because I know that many are paid below minimum wage and that I get treated well at places I frequent. Don't be a dick. Tip your waitress, you cheap bastards.

Sweet, I sense a tipping derail (first on Rerolled) where neckbeards come out of the woodwork and get all huffed up by having to tip at a restaurant. You anti social fucks. Stay home.

I say tax churches. One stupid baptist church in my city has so much money they keep adding on and on to their gym. They have a humongous indoor track, top quality workout facilities, multiple basketball and voleyball courts indoors, a huge rock climbing wall, etc, etc. It's the biggest and nicest workout facility I've ever seen in my life.

People need to learn, as I was told early in life... Tipping is the oil which keeps the machine of society properly lubricated and running.
Want a waitress to always remember your favorites when you go to a place? tip well.
Want waitstaff to double check and make sure your order is right before bringing it out? tip well.
SO many things are solved by just making sure that the people taking care of you are taken good care of....

Tipping is essentially a pay-for-performance business design it isn't capped as a set wage is, it is similar to piece rate work, or commission systems. Gratuity generally scales with service, hence the difference between an 18% tip or a 30% tip. The tipping debate tends to arise when amounts less than 15% are discussed. Are you a proponent of if you go into a department store and try on 2 pairs of shoes you should buy 3 pair? The commission salesperson generally makes less than minimum wage to be compensated throughearnedcommission, by taking up a salesperson's time you are increasing their workload and as they are not compensated a standardized wage should you not buy more/higher priced items to see them adequately paid for their efforts? What seems a lifetime ago I did do sales and I appreciate good salespeople now which means I will buy from/spend higher if someone comes across as a good salesperson just as I will tip higher with escalating service.

What the fuck? You aren't talking about buying 3 pair you are talking about determining whether the salesperson deserves a undervalued(or even 0) commission. How are you this bad at constructing analogies?

I too enjoy this american issue debate greatly.
Although... I feel like I've seen this discussion before.
