Last numbers I saw showed that even with all the After purchase crashes AND all the while-testing/betaing/*teaching the AI* crashes combined, it's still a lower crash per period rate than normal driving. The tough question is how we program them to answer The Trolley Problem; and how we market that.
Every poll they do on the subject, an overwhelming number of people say BOTH:
a) the car should kill the X occupants to save X+Y (where Y>0) pedestrians AND
b) they would never buy a car that prioritized like that.
So either the car makers have to lie to us for a better for humanity answer (and face the lawsuits when the programing is exposed), or the cars have to be programed to save the occupants above all else; consequences for pedestrians and other drivers be damned. That's truly a fucked place to be.
