Actually, I think the pressing-harder-on-a-remote thing has a basis in fact. The buttons use conductive rubber pads to detect being pressed; a common failure mode is for the resistance to creep up over time, eventually to the point that the voltage drop across it is high enough to interfering with signaling. Pressing harder increases the contact area, effectively reducing the electrical resistance.
