It stands 275 feet (83 m) tall, and is over 36 feet (11 m) in diameter at the base. Sequoia trunks remain wide high up. Sixty feet above the base, the Sherman Tree is 17.5 feet (5.3 m) in diameter. It's estimated to be around 2,300 to 2,700 years old.

Stewart's unit was part of the 445th Bombardment Group of the 8th Air Force, based in England. Starting in November 1943 he flew his first combat mission, which was Kiel, Germany. They hit a U-Boat pen. The average lifespan for a B-24 crew was twelve missions. Stewart flew twenty missions, including one over Berlin.
