Yeah, virtually all the old school department chains had restaurants or at least a counter (Macy's, Boston Store, Woolworth's, regional equivalents like Gimbel's in my neck of the woods) up through the 80s. It wasn't until mostly the early 90s that the surviving higher end chains tore out the space and the lower end chains converted to fast food franchises near the exit (Subway, Starbucks, etc.)

Some restaurants still exist in individual department store locations (like the Chicago Macy's Walnut Room).. and oddballs like Ikea, which went retro and have a cafeteria.

When my mom took me out of school for a dentist appointment, the highlight of the day was a hotdog at the Woolworths lunch counter.

When I was a kid, as one of the anchor stores to our malls, Woolworth's not only had the counter in the store proper, but also had a unit next door that was just table seating for their food.

And to be clear, Kmart actually had multiple generations of restaurant models. Off the top of my head, they had the 50s(?) through mid-80s full on restaurant Brahma's ad references, usually in the middle back of the store to handle the gas / power hookups you'd need for the deep fryer, grill, ovens, etc.

Then in the late 80s / early 90s they had the slimmed down K-Cafe model that might have had a grill but otherwise was more of a sub shop, which was frequently moved towards the front / exit of the store.

Then in the mid / late 90s they had a partnership with Little Caesar's where LC brought in pizza and apparently took over the Kcafe restaurant operations.

Then by the 00s there was just the LC name / food offerings, barely distinguishable from the standard franchises you would find nowadays in most Targets / Walmarts / etc.

Oh man, it was a special day once a year when we went back to school shopping for paper, pens, coloured pencils, whatever. On that day we got to go to K-Mart's restaurant. They had a roast beef on a bun sandwich served with gravy. I might be horrified if I ate it now, but I probably had it once a year preceding grades 1-7 or 8. It was delicious and felt very luxurious at the time. We almost never went to any restaurant except special occasions. Once a year to a specific Chinese restaurant was the only guaranteed one apart from K-Mart back to school shopping. It's so silly looking back at it, but it was living like a king at the time.
