Yeah, virtually all the old school department chains had restaurants or at least a counter (Macy's, Boston Store, Woolworth's, regional equivalents like Gimbel's in my neck of the woods) up through the 80s. It wasn't until mostly the early 90s that the surviving higher end chains tore out the space and the lower end chains converted to fast food franchises near the exit (Subway, Starbucks, etc.)
Some restaurants still exist in individual department store locations (like the Chicago Macy's Walnut Room).. and oddballs like Ikea, which went retro and have a cafeteria.

That's me walking from one room to the next for some reason.
We used to get the "sack of sandwiches" for lunch on Saturdays. Was a plastic bag like a bread loaf bag with 8 ham sandwiches on hamburger buns. Weird the things you remember from 40+ years ago.
When my mom took me out of school for a dentist appointment, the highlight of the day was a hotdog at the Woolworths lunch counter.Yeah, virtually all the old school department chains had restaurants or at least a counter (Macy's, Boston Store, Woolworth's, regional equivalents like Gimbel's in my neck of the woods) up through the 80s. Yes, the Kmart Cafe...ate there many a times.
When I was a kid, as one of the anchor stores to our malls, Woolworth's not only had the counter in the store proper, but also had a unit next door that was just table seating for their food. When my mom took me out of school for a dentist appointment, the highlight of the day was a hotdog at the Woolworths lunch counter.
