I fucking loved System Shock 2 back in the day. I wish the remaster had gone with a full rebuild, though. I’m not impressed with those graphics at all.

Yeah, I loved it back when it came out, but this looks like they upgraded the graphics from 1999 and stopped at 2010.

I usually watch this every year but it took me awhile to find it, and I kind of frogot about it.

The presentation is usually very cringey and full of braindead politics. Good for a laugh. There's also the "who croaked this year" section.

I'm halfway through and suffering. It's really bad.

Odd because they completely remade system shock.

I'm actually playing through that now and it's kind of meh. The visual style combined with the level design is a bit frustrating. Almost like looking through a snowstorm, very annoying trying to pick out useful and key items out of the noise of everything else.

All they have to do is display $5.50 next to the cost yet everyone is clickbaiting about it. KR games do a step further where the company has to state actual RNG percentages already.

Same company did a great remaster of Turok.

Best way I can describe it is that playing felt exactly like I remember the game when I played it as a kid, but then I read up on everything they did and it was a ton of not just optimization but also gameplay tweaks that felt like they should have always been there but weren't. Basically, a genuine labor of love to make an old game as playable as possible.

Ed: As I was about to post, found this reddit thread about gameplay enhancements Nightdive made to Turok 2. Good example of what I'm talking about:

Pickups:

  • Got improved detection radius and, from what I can tell, got spherical detection as well. This improvement makes picking up respawning ammo and health much easier. The player can jump up and down to pick them up rather than run back and forth. Trust me, it matters.
Weapons:

  • The P.F.M. has a larger radius and more damage making it actually useful. Still falls through floors from time to time.
  • The Tranquilizer Rifle now has ammo pickups.
  • Cerebral Bore has better lock on and tracking for 100% more awesomeness.
  • The explosive ammo for the Shredder is much improved so the enemy does not just shrug it off.
  • The Grenade Launcher has improved damage and blast radius, making it useful for a change of pace.
  • Tek Bow has improved damage for Tek Arrows, so you don't need an entire quiver to kill a nat.
  • The Razor Wind…wait I am saving that for last.
Enemies:

  • Enemies actually die when they are killed and no longer cause damage during their death animation.
  • Arrows can now be recovered during an enemy death animation and while still alive. Meaning you can keep using the same arrow over and over to kill something. So much fun adding insult to injury.
Game Mechanics:

  • Grappling (grabbing ledges) has been added making all the platforming easier.
  • Better and more distinctive crosshair.
  • Analogue movement with no more look spring.
  • Save any time.
  • Checkpoints are now bidirectional teleporters allowing you to move about the levels much easier or even leave if you wish. Crazy annoying backtracking is gone.
  • Increased health to 250
  • Swimming automatically double taps forward increasing your movement in water.
  • Life Forces are no longer picked up when reaching the max amount. I AM TUROK!
  • Health spawns favor blue and full health respawns. Such a time saver.
Levels:

  • Levels have been modified to reduce a lot of backtracking in the same area. For example, in the Lair of the Blind Ones, the first Thermal Vent in the N64 version the player had to drop down into the water and walk all the way back up to the exact same point to continue. In the Night Dive version, they added a pedestal to jump on, so the player does not have to run all the way back through the level.
  • Numerous level changes and way too many to describe. The majority changes have been to Lair of the Blind Ones. Most of the last area has been modified to remove the maze of narrow walkways and jumps. Overall, all the levels have been streamlined for convenience.
Now, about that Razor Wind, don't get too excited, it still sucks. However, the Razor Wind left me god smacked as I sat there in amazement not believing what I was looking at. The Razor Wind's blood stain now represents the same color as the enemy it hits. It’s no longer always red. It's an improvement that most would not notice or care about, but it shows the level of attention Night Dive gave Turok 2. So, a pat on the back for caring enough to do more than the minimum.

Large majority of gacha games display RNG rates ingame already, at least I haven't seen one that doesn't, and that's for global versions.

The change would be good though cause most gachas use fucking stupid ass conversions all the time and it's annoying. You need say 160 gems of whatever the fuck to buy one pull, and you can buy 3792 gems for 20$. Another game will use 180 gems per pull though and whatever gems for 25$ instead so you have to convert again. All they need to do is normalize this shit so the numbers make more sense though, they don't actually have to close the game, just UI changes at most.

cdproject red 2024 report. some pretty interesting things. first, they are very transparent on numbers.

some of the more interesting things. Digital sales dominating. pc market is top. Asian pc market the reason?
PC long tail is 100% a thing. digital distribution.

xbox ouch. witcher 3 sold better on the Switch then xbox in a number of years.

a forum, and reddit talking about it.

as noted in the reddit thread. cyberpunk split:
2020: PS 13% PC 71% Xbox 15%
2021: PS 29% PC 58% Xbox 13%
2022: PS 25% PC 57% Xbox 19%
2023: PS 22% PC 65% Xbox 13%
2024: PS 26% PC 62% Xbox 12%

unreal 5 huh?

any other immersive sims use unreal 5?
lol? "look avowed proves unreal 5 is good!" lists outer worlds, grounded, palworld, stalker 2, etc as being in unreal5.

Atomfall is unreal 5.

That discussion on KCD2 and how good it looked.
KCD 1 and 2 are Cryengine.

Prey 2016 is cryengine.

redfall was unreal 4..

doom eternal and indiana jones, is id tech 7.

farcry is a fork of cryengine. (dunia)

I dont really know anything about how that shit works... but, I do think it seems like cryengine games stand out for visuals and interaction..

I don't know how I feel about an Oblivion remake/remaster.... a big part of the charm of the OG game was how jank it was.

Everything I had heard was that this wasn't a remake, it was a 'Game still runs in original engine, the graphics are simply shunted to an unreal 5 layer' deal, so all the systemic issues many people have with Oblivion (level scaling, skill system) should be unchanged.

I thought the whole excuse/cope for Avoid was that it wasn't open world, so it's not fair to compare it to a 20 year old game.

It's pcgamer, so they probably got paid to simp for it, but Unreal 5 gets a lot of flak because of how predictably unoptimized Unreal 5 games are while not looking remotely good enough to justify it. Although the optimization falls on the developers in the end, you would think that eventually Epic would look into how/why developers continue to mess up what are supposedly basic steps.

That's certainly a choice because fixing the level scaling and skills would help a ton, especially if whatever they're doing with Unreal potentially affects the ease of modding the game.

After all these other AAA stinkers coming out I'll 100% play it. Already beat Wukong and Rebirth.
