Bungie going to war over some DMCA takedowns.

Wish Google was a plaintiff though. Probably won't lead to anything meaningful. Can't limit complaints to accounts that are x years old because then people will just use stolen accounts... and starting some kind of vetted system is probably not realistic.

Not surprising actually. Most "pop" entertainment whether its music, tv, etc usually makes the bulk of the money/consumption. See examples like Cardi B, Kardashians, etc.

Is it just me, but what in the fuck is there to do on mobile devices that gain so much money? I haven't played a mobile game in 4 years since I got sucked into Summoner's War. Maybe I answered my own question. Just rando games people get addicted to and whale out on?

Whales and now every kid in the world who can scrounge up a few bucks throws them at these games.

My 10 year old nephew, kid has spent probably $50 on roblox money.

Gashapon, that shit preys on that gambling/scratch off ticket primal desire/dopamine pump. What seems like 2$ here, 5$ there quickly turns into 50$, 100$, 500$.

I never really understood how it ropes people in on mobile games, since people are just rolling for waifus and/or unit growth; none of which has any monetary gain.. But then again, I've watched friends spend 150$ to get an heirloom in Apex.. And recently been going through a CSGO kick with a few friends.. I've been playing devils advocate and constantly telling my friends "oh man someone's gonna unbox a knife soooon" which can resell anywhere from 300$ to 6000$. Literal jackpot odds. I swore off opening the boxes myself because I managed to open a knife worth at the time 150$ by only spending roughly 30$.. Sold it and bought like 2 or 3 games and called it a day.

When I lived in Tokyo, the OG gashapon machines got me. Easily spent like 100$ on various machines trying to get a little trinket that I wanted out of 5 or 6 options. Convinced myself all the ones I didn't want were just gifts for friends and family.

Guessing it’s just because the audience is way bigger than consoles or PCs too. Every person has a smartphone now. A family of five that might have one console, or zero, has four or five phones. it’s estimated over 80% of the world has a smart phone. That’s 6 billion+ people, where something like PlayStation 5 has sold like 20 million. 20 million install base versus 6,500 million.

Now factor in that you can buy in small increments so people don’t realize how much they’re spending. People hesitate to buy $60 games but they’ll spend $5-10 no problem, multiple times a month and exceed $60 easily.

Then you have whales that make up for the small spenders where they just don’t give a fuck and spend hundreds or thousands on a game every month. Most console and PC games don’t have unlimited buying options like star citizen, they’re usually a one and done thing.

Oh right. The small transaction sizes makes a huge difference. I should see it as it’s happening in my own house. My son spent the last of his money that he had earned through various ways on robux. Didn’t hesitate to slap that $5 down. Just insane that it’s bigger than both other gaming markets combined but with the audience size it makes sense.

This. There are gazillions more cell phones in the world than there are consoles and gaming PCs, and people are much more willing to make $1-5 purchases than they are $50-60 ones.

I don't really do mobile gaming. I play only 1 free casual game and I purchase seasonal content updates 4-6x per year at $5 each.
But so many mobile games are time/action locked and require lots more $ dumped in to play at the pace that the user would prefer, or to "keep up" with the meta and playerbase.

Even if we assume that the average PC/Console game is $50, there is just such a larger volume of smaller transactions on mobile games that it dwarfs the other platforms.

I remember when my (now billionaire) buddy was telling me back in the late 90s that mobile gaming would soon eclipse all other gaming, and I laughed. I think we had Nokia/Motorola/Ericsson phones at the time, and the "best gaming experience" was Snake in color. It didn't compute.

It still doesnt compute. 99% of mobile games are gotcha trash that should never have been made. But thanks to humans being absolute retards, well there is lots of money to be made dangling pixels in front of them.

IMO microtransactions rank up there with social media with how much its damaged humanity and set back quality of life. Why take the risk and spend tens of millions of dollars trying to bring various artists and programmers together over a year or two to make a quality game when you can throw pennies at foreign code monkeys and churn out some bare bones loot box simulator that will make far more than your contemporary game ever would have?

This is all you have to say. It applies to nearly every situation in which lots of money is being made. Don't overthink it and just go with it.

Because the people at the top making all that money don't give a fuck about the games being made as they don't play them. You'd think that some of the developers that worked on games would have trickled to the top by now to help curb this, but nope. Or if they have, they made it to the top by being corrupt and it's just more of the same.

Buying cosmetics/microtransactions transcends normal stupid behavior.

Like think how dumb collecting funko pops or comparable globhomo trinkets are. Microtransactions are infinitely worse than that because at least in 4-5 years when whatever flavor of the month game you spent money on isnt even a memory in human history, the neckbeard with funko pops will still have his funko pops.
