Seems harsh to me. McCarthy and Wiig are funny. I don't really watch SNL so can't say anything about the other two. But as long as it's funny, I don't see the issue with gender swapping the main characters.
That said, I know I won't be shelling out the money to see this in theaters, but would definitely rent this.
A lot of people are missing the point. The gender swap isn't the issue. Well, it's not for most.
The original ghostbusters worked well for a shit ton of reasons; the writing, the actors, the fact that the roles and movie were written FOR those actors. (Admitted rewrites and character replacements though.)
It's sort of asinine to think that you can make ghostbusters work by just putting any four dingos into the roles and calling it that. The only reason the gender shit gets mentioned, is because when people were super angry about a new ghostbusters, the cast/crew/director all made it out to be this big misogyny thing. Like, if we didn't like the ghostbusters that MUST be the reason. And then they made big appearances, like this.
Girl Power
I'm sure there are plenty of people who are angry about it just being gender swapped, but it's not that they're females. It's that they're ANYONE ELSE but the originals.
Reboots happen. Remakes happen. I get all of that. Ghostbusters is a little higher on my blip meter because I was obsessed as a kid. And really, when you look at the movie, it's not a hard reboot. It's a remake; you can basically see the roles the guys played all those years ago in the women. So really, all it feels like is a movie created to make a social stance about WOMEN CAN DO IT LIKE THE GUYS CAN. Don't do that to my movies, man.
And those aren't the only reasons. The movie doesn't look good in general; were it bridesmaids 2 it would still be trash. I don't understand why she's licking her proton gun but hey whatever floats your boat.
Also, the plot doesn't even sound original. It sounds pretty close to the ghostbusters video game, at least from the quotes. (With things amplifying paranormal activity.)
Add to that maybe the biggest god damn atrocity of the whole thing: The fact that as a reboot, the old ghostbusters never existed. Poof. They could have done it a bunch of different ways with women. Maybe they're the daughters of the old ghostbusters, carrying on the family tradition. Maybe not even that, maybe they just need to take up the mantle and they're the best scientists so it HAS to be them.
Making them women, putting them into eerily similar roles as the original, (You've got the black character, (Jones) the witty one liner, (McKinnon) the one who does the occult shit, (McCarthy) and the one who looks like they'd sleep with the tub of ooze, (Wiig) and then not even hearkening back to the originals, god damn that is some balls.
I want this shit to end careers, so when the douchebags remaking Labyrinth see it, they'll start burning scripts.
Yes, my jimmies are amazingly rustled.
