it was a strong franchise, but ghostbusters 2's poor reception and whatever was up bill murrays butt over starring in it, ended all that. they could have come back for one more had murray been on board. i dont even mind a reboot. a GOOD reboot, but a shot for shot remake isnt the way to go. it never is. it just reminds people how well done the original was.

strike that, there is one exception. the rermake of Dawn of The Dead was excellent.
Dawn of the Dead remake was superior to the original in most ways. I'm not sure you could actually say that about the vast majority of rehashes/reboots, but Dawn of the Dead is numero uno.

You guys REALLY think this movie is going to 'bomb'? I'm guessing it makes a nice profit but doesn't make 500 million or anything.
I don't know if it's going to bomb, but I really don't think they'll make a "nice profit".

I'm expecting Fantastic Four like box showing.

Edit: More so, I expect it to do terribly *if* the trailer ends up being accurate for what the movie is. At this point, I think there's enough negative press that more people are unlikely to see it in theaters, so unless it actually ends up being really good and word of mouth gets around, I will not be expecting it to do much.

I bet they released that early trailer to test the waters and find out how many actually want to pay to see a feminist fan fiction version of ghostbusters

These shot for shot remakes are most successful with shit like horror movies and westerns. Where the premise, setting and concept carry the movie more and you can sorta slot in whoever if the technical execution is solid. The problem with action and comedies is that they are often a product of the directors particular vision and especially for comedies the chemistry and delivery of the individual actors who helped carry the movie.

I know I also referenced the Force Awakens but its more a reboot full of callbacks that heavily references its predecessors. As many parallels as people have accurately drawn between TFA and EP4, its still not a scene-for-scene remake. If it was, in the same way that this looks to be, then you would have had Rey literally living with her aunt and uncle, not an orphan, Finn would be a bad boy smuggler, not a defecting stormtrooper. I could go on but you get the gist. SW is all about archetypes, from Lucas' original vision of a modern myth and onward. So making a movie that references its own archetypes works for that franchise.

This is looking to be a literal remake in that each character is completely copied, the Venkman, the Egon, etc. This is simply harder to pull off in a comedy blockbuster style movie IMO, as Vex said much of what made it work the first time was Murray, Weaver, Moranis, Akroyd and company. Just taking some SNL people today and throwing them in this won't recreate it. Give them their own vehicle that works for their talents and is original for today's world. That's another thing about blockbuster comedies, they tend to be very much a product of their times, culturally a remake doesn't capture the same spirit. Whereas a horror/western can transcend social trends and succeed from strong premise no matter when its remade. Not that there aren't failures in remaking those genres as well, but its more likely someone can pull it off.

both my wife and sister love to say they support women in films and TV, yet the reality is they never, ever, ever follow through. Both watched Spy and Trainwreck at home on torrents I downloaded for them, even though they swore they would go to theaters to watch it opening weekend. They've never watched an episode of Amy Schumer or Broad City, etc but love Key & Peele. Meanwhile I always book a ticket opening weekend for any good sci fi movie, the only movie they were super excited about and went to prearranged movie party things for was Magic Mike.

I think this movie will do well, it'll work good for date night type movies.

Its also interesting that I've noticed many women who always say they are feminist don't listen to women in music either. If Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, Ariana Grande, etc come on the radio my wife switches channels immediately, whereas I don't really care as long as its got a nice beat. On the other hand both love Oprah and Ellen, non threatening? Need more data!

It's going to be hard for this to actually "bomb." I think that it's a much stronger license than something like Total Recall or Robocop and the trailer makes it look like it would be a movie that's good for kids while still having some parental appeal.

It's not going to be as successful as the studio wants though so in their eyes it'll be a failure even if in all reality it did alright.

I don't think it will be unsuccessful financially. It opens on a pretty quiet weekend in July where there really isn't much competition, nor much the week before. I imagine it will open at #1, but then it has to contend with Star Trek the following weekend. At this point, however, I don't think it will be successful enough to relaunch the Ghostbusters franchise to the point where they can do a Marvel-esque shared universe thing which is what Columbia Pictures really wants out of this.

It reminds me of how a lot of comedians talk about how they can't really return to a city until they have new jokes. For the most part, a joke loses a little bit of its humor and becomes a little less funny each time you hear it. It's a lot easier to remake an action movie since its mostly built on its plot. You can't as easily remake a comedy because you just can't tell the same jokes and expect the same reaction. The original Ghostbusters movie wasn't successful because it was a movie about guys hunting down ghosts. It was successful because it was thatandit was funny. The plot of this Ghostbusters is going to live and die on its humor, and I think its plot is almost beside the point.

Trailer makes it look like Spice Girls the Movie, really cashing in on that 80's nostalgia there... The CGI really concerns me but I don't have any problems with most of the cast having seen so little, the black sterotype seems like a Family Guy joke though.

Yep, they've already done that. You can just google ghostbusters girl power and that's all you get. Similar to them casting Jones; the character she plays, even if it aligns with her type of comedy, (which it does) is so fucking stereotypical token black character. But, they're covered there too. Yea, we totally recast the same role that has been used over and over, BUT IT'S HER COMEDY. THAT'S NOT STEREOTYPICAL.

I'm also fucking amazed that people can call this some type of girl power. Redoing a much loved franchise and just putting females in it is a feminist movement? You're not at all worried that they're letting you walk all over a classic, instead of giving you an original IP that was MADE for you? That doesn't upset the feminists out there?

As far as financially, the budget was 154 mil. So they'd have to make, at the very least, twice that. I also see their promotional shit being in the higher range, if they're already promoting now. If it doesn't make around 400 mil, it won't be a success financially. (I assume anyways, but they seem like relatively safe assumptions.)

Fantastic four had a budget of 120ish mil, and made 170 mil. Which sounds like a profit until you factor in their promotional budget, which I couldn't find a number for, but on bigger budgets can start at around 40mil.

The biggest difference that might sway is that people are straight up negative about this movie, something not even FF could boast.

The only way I honestly see this being "successful" is if the movie is actually not that bad. Granted, whoever mentioned that it was a slow weekend when it releases could affect it, but I don't see them pulling in enough opening weekend to put them on track.

I remember kinda liking Spice World when I saw it on basic cable. Might have had something to do with being 17 with no internet.

Why does the CGI concern you? I thought it looked really sharp, especially in the night scenes.

People who post 'reaction' videos are as bad as Chuk and his "what you may have missed 34.4" Game of Thrones videos.

Because all CGI is a shitfest. They should have used real ghosts if they wanted to be taken seriously.
