Yeah, I'm not sure how I feel about plots on the show going beyond the books, even with Martin involved.
Honestly, I think as a fan a person should feel pretty good about exactly that outcome. 2 things. First, he'll probably never finish the series. Honestly, he won't. It is fairly obvious that he did not expect to get the Wheel of Time fanbase that he managed to snag and he's just running out of steam. Second, hasn't he made his entire career out of being a television writer? This show really is his medium more than the books.

I'd say that running the show past the books probably gives the books a higher likelihood of ever being completed. As a fan, I'd feel pretty good about it really.

What I think going on is that Martin created GoT as a trilogy and the money guys convinced him to turn the trilogy into 7 books. So we get lots of filler. The final book will be good since he had it plotted out from the start.

He's obviously not really working on it. He's been interviewed explaining how to make the series take longer so he can 'catch up'. Translation: so he doesn't have to work on it.

He's never going to finish it, he's going to die first. At this point it's best to just assume there will be no more books and go on to some other series by some other author.

From what I've read online, it sounds like all of Winds of Winter that is near done (less than half at last report) is just stuff that was being worked on for Dance with Dragons but didn't get put in. I really doubt he's done much at all since the last book was released.

I hope he finishes it but every single one of you dies first.

Yeah, I just don't think he will finish the series either. Right now it looks like 3 years or so till another book, then another 5 years to the last book. Which btw, we can't really be sure it will be the last book. It was going to be 3, then 4, then 5, then 6 and finally 7.

So, even if you assume that he won't add another book, its a minimum of 8 years until the series finishes, and that is the best case scenario.

Best case scenario is he finishes in exactly 5 years and you all succumb to the ravages of the HIV you gave each other in 4 years 11months and 29 days.

Pretty easy to tell who has never written anything large before. Motivation plays a large part, but writing stuff can be hard if you're feeling drained. That's to say nothing of self-critique...it's possible he may have to restart multiple times because what he wrote "didn't work".

Yeah, keep telling yourself that. He's just having a good time with whatever years he has left. If you think he's spending any significant time writing, well, go ahead and think that.

Dude has made tens of millions of dollars since the shows took off, I don't blame him for wanting to enjoy that. And I'll tell him when I have him tied to a chair in my basement in front of a typewriter.

They are not going to put a successful show on hiatus just because he wants them too. He worked in television he should know better.
