None of them are really good or bad. Except the flayers and the Mountain, nothing redeeming in them. Varys may believe in his cause, but his cause is still HIS cause. He claims to "serve the realm" but he doesn't give a fuck about the realm. Look at the state of it. Unless by "realm" he doesn't mean the Seven Kingdoms but the entrenched power of the Valyrian descendents. Which is dumb, but not as dumb as some people in this story.I wouldn't say that makes him bad though. The whole series really just comes down to perspective. He believes that the Targaryen family are the rightful rulers of Westeros and the Starks, Lannisters, Baratheons are all the "bad guys". It doesn't matter which House has the least assholes in it, or who would be the best rulers because at the end of the day none of them should even be on the throne. Ned might of been a "good guy", but he was still the enemy.
We won't know for sure until the end, but I personally think his motives are not that complicated. He is loyal to the rightful rulers. Until the day comes that a Targaryen is on the throne again he is going to do what he can to keep everyone else weak. Obviously "rightful ruler" is just another matter of perspective, but it is the part of the series that appeals most to me. Fans could debate for hours why their favorite House should be the rulers.
Gryff is with him but he isn't the boy's father.he means young aegon the gryffs son.
i'd probably say that they're tied as far as my favorite goes. barristan's entrance was pretty cool too. first you have this cute little girl kind of playfully following dany & jorah as they're walking around astapor. then she rolls her this ball and beckons for her to open it. all the while you see a shrouded figure kind of following behind them and he bursts on the scene before dany can open the ball. after that she drops it and you see this grotesque scorpion/insect thing that was obviously going to kill her. barristan stabs it with a dagger and then the girl opens her mouth and scowls at them and you see rotting, bluish teeth.
after than barristan chases her for a minute but she jumps into the water and escapes. not ten seconds later you see her on top of a ship, staring at them, completely dry. was a pretty cool way to end the episode, and i was surprised they introduced barristan this early. they didn't do any "arstan whitebeard" disguise because i guess it would have been obvious to the viewers who it was. sadly it appears they eliminated the "strong belwas" character though.
I'm sure some bookreaders will be disappointed in this - not me - but there is no Arstan Whitebeard. He tells his name flat out, Jorah recognizes him, the completely dispense with that subterfuge. I think its a smart move; while fun at the time, that deception isn't necessary and would just take up valuable time.
yes i know, i was trying to jog Msbehavin's memory about young aegon. hell, the gryff isnt even gryff.Gryff is with him but he isn't the boy's father.
This. When you think about it, even in the books we don't see much of Barristan fighting. If he does the champion vs. champion fight, it gives them a chance to show that he is still a badass, despite his age. They already have a huge cast, cutting Strong Belwas will allow them to give more screen time to Barristan and Jorah. My guess would be Barristan will take on the hero.
