In the book the shadow killed a different guy in Stormhold after this scene with Davos taking her through the cave. Then the shadow scene with Renly getting faceplanted came later.

Wait, so when did Stannis cut off Davos' fingers exactly? I assumed it was before the siege and that's how Stannis and Davos met up. But are you saying Davos (with all his fingers still) smuggles in food for Stannis while the city was under siege thereby saving Stannis' life and the lives of his men and Stannis THEN cuts off his fingers for that act of smuggling?!?!?! That's some cold shit right there if that's how events unfolded. Shit, rules is rules I guess.

That's exactly what happened. Davos smuggled onions and other food to Stannis and his men who were down to eating rats. When the siege was over Stannis punished Davos for being a life-long smuggler by chopping off some fingers. He then rewarded Davos for saving him by knighting him and letting him enter Stannis' service as one of his trusted advisers.

This line pretty much sums up Stannis: "It was justice. A good act does not wash out the bad, nor a bad act the good. Each should have its own reward. You were a hero and a smuggler."

He didn't cut them off for that particular act of smuggling, it was for all the other ones that Davos had done in his life.

Yes, he was. He is basically the no-nonsense Han Solo of Westeros.

But like was pointed out, chopping off the fingers really defines Stannis as a person. If you wanted to use D&D terms, he would definitely be in the "lawful" category. He is pretty uncompromising when it comes to that, although the sets of laws that he follows have been changed slightly as he has gotten more involved with Mel.

Which is what makes that relationship so intriguing is that he's struggling being lawful to a fault whilst breaking all the rules to get what he wants.

I almost forgot about this show without Aleksei updating us on a daily basis as to how soon Winter is Coming.

And following on the previous 'who can beat Jaime in a fight' discussion, and only having read the first book (so hopefully not a spoiler but only a prediction - this was not in the show however), it intrigues me to see someone wielding a flaming sword...

Rewatching the last episode of S2 and it occurs to me that the first thing Shae did when she met with Tyrion was push for him to go to Pentos. I never realized that before. Kind of reinforces the whole theory of her being Varys' creature.

So Varys sent Bronn to protect Tyrion and try to avoid her bring killed by Starks to prevent hostilities from going out of control. Then have Bronn introduce Shae to Tyrion to try to nudge Tyrion towards Pentos to... help the Targs? Sure, Varys wants to help the Targs, but I don't think Tyrion would before he saw what a horror show King's Landing had become.

I think you bring up an interesting point, and there is evidence for Shae being a "creature of Varys", just from how he saved her from Cersei, but at the same time, I think we may be stretching a bit much. Too many (way too many) pieces needed to fall into place between "A" and "B" that he couldn't influence to get Tyrion on his side in this area.

Not necessarily, Varys could have gotten to her while she was in King's Landing somehow. I highly doubt Varys could have positioned Bronn in that tavern on the off chance Tyrion ran into Catelyn and she went bugfuck crazy and kidnapped him. He's a badass, but he's not that much of a badass. Unless they show something else in the show we aren't likely to find out for sure, pretty sure George is done talking about her.

Didnt tyrion end up with her completely by accident? He didnt even pick her but had one of his men send him a pretty whore? At the time tyrion wasnt even Hand. I guess shae was intended for tywin all along and when tyrion was put in jail she went back to tywin and maybe poisoned tywin herself?
