It's a little frustrating that they are considerably off-book in all the main storylines right now. Dany storyline is off book, Tyrion, Jon Snow/Sam/Gilly, Sansa/LF/Boltons... all off-book.

They are blazing their own trail now, and it's good, but bad too. I kinda wish it was following the book storylines more closely, but at the same time, cutting out so much of the nonsense in the books is a good thing.

The next year waiting for season 6 to start is going to be frustrating.
I feel since they've treaded into book 4/5 territory the show has surpassed the source. It is cleaner and more concise. They obviously didn't want to have the enormous cast from the source so they've simply merged some characters and made other characters replace others. They've breezed over and completely ignored some of the "feinted" and worthless storylines (like the prince of Dorne trying to woo Dany ... still could happen I guess)

I think so far the most telling thing they've done is killed off Barristan. We could still not exactly know what will happen in the books obviously but it appears whatever Barriston is doing in Mareen won't matter and Dany just comes flying back. Again just glancing over what Barristan is/was doing in Mareen in favor of a cleaner storyline with Dany as the primary ruler.

i think as a book reader the fact the tv show is going in a different direction is a relief. i no longer need to worry about stuff being spoiled as long as the show keeps pooping out filler like, jamie and bronn buddy cop, sansa torture porn and hot titties.

Possibly an unpopular opinion but I find the first maybe 75% of the SOI&F books to be pretty fucking boring. Basically nothing is going on then the storyline advances by a babystep with some small cliffhanger at the end of the character's chapter. It is the back 25% where the books really shine and the show seems to reside exclusively in that zone for the most part and just glances over quickly how they got to the actual cool shit.

If the minutiae of the family intrigues don't get you then yeah, I'm not sure how it could keep you hooked better than a phone book.

I love the books but there are PoVs that bore the fuck out of me and it's a struggle just slogging through them (Victarion, Griff) and I can imagine someone who disliked more than a few would prolly just put it down.

Can someone remind me why Mel could not use leeches to get kings blood from Shireen, or even Stannis? Didn't they do that with Gendry and it worked out? Last I recall we saw him sailing away in the boat? Did I miss something?

are we talking about dany? bitch was seriously fitghting to keep that blanket over her tits. they need to stop that practice, its as irritating as comedies with laugh tracks. either put some damned clothes on or show your bewbs above the covers.
She wanted to be taken seriously and earn movie roles. Serious movies like Terminator. So she couldn't show titties for the show that made her famous. I can understand not wanting to be nude all the time and having rough sex on screen like she did, but to go from that to doing the sheets over tits sitting up in bed shit is beyond retarded.

Wait so she did a sex scene in cowgirl with the sheets held up around her chest?

Fuck man when someone refuses to do the nude scenes you should just fire them and recast the character.

*edit*

Also, showing off your tits isn't a death sentence for your acting career. Off the top of my head, it didn't hurt Jamie Lee Curtis and it actually helped Anne Hathaway.

I don't know if they spelled it out but I assumed they required a greater sacrifice

So my guess for how the Jon Snow arc goes:

Melly goes back to the Wall to fetch Stannis' girl. At the same time Jon arrives back from Hardhome with Giantsbane and a whole mess load of wildlings. A message arrives from Winterfell from Sansa asking for help from Jon. Similar to the books he tries to rally the wildlings to his cause. His helper dude stabs him in the chaos in a pretty similar fashion to the source. And that will be the final thing we hear of Jon this season. Possibly they may end the season on that note.
Shireen is with them no? Stannis said he refused to leave them at Castle Black because everyone there is a rapist or a murderer. So Mel doesn't have to go back to get her.

It's been so long since I read the books, but I swear the leech shit was a TV only thing -- and it bothered me at the time that that was all it took to kill Renly, Balon, and Robb (well, not Balon since he's MIA from the TV show). It set a precedent that you could basically just leech your way to killing anyone you wanted.

It is in the books. I'm going to guess that she saw their deaths in the fire and came up with a bullshit ritual to take credit for it - her PoV chapter shows that she is/was a con artist magician who has gained some real power but still mixes in her old tricks for effect. She can't repeat shadow people because it drained Stannis' life force and in the books he becomes visibly more tried.

"Say the name," Melisandre commanded. The leech was twisting in the king's grip, trying to attach itself to one of his fingers . "The usurper," he said. "Joffrey Baratheon." When he tossed the leech into the fire, it curled up like an autumn leaf amidst the coals, and burned. Stannis grasped the second. "The usurper," he declared, louder this time. "Balon Greyjoy." He flipped it lightly onto the brazier, and its flesh split and cracked. The blood burst from it, hissing and smoking. The last was in the king's hand. This one he studied a moment as it writhed between his fingers. "The usurper," he said at last. "Robb Stark." And he threw it on the flames.

Anyway, the leeches didn't set a precedent to being able to leech your way to anything. The leeches were probably a parlor trick by Melisandre. She saw in her visions that the 3 kings were going to die, so set up this whole charade to build her power. Melisandre is clearly a mix of real power and parlor tricks to make her magic seem more powerful than it really is.

From the very limited POV of Melly I never got the impression she was playing games to make herself seem more powerful

Or maybe I'm not remembering them

Whenever she was asked what she saw within her fires, Melisandre would answer, "Much and more," but seeing was never as simple as those words suggested.

Martin, George R.R. (2011-07-12). A Dance with Dragons: A Song of Ice and Fire: Book Five (p. 408). Random House, Inc.. Kindle Edition.

While the boy was gone, Melisandre washed herself and changed her robes. Her sleeves were full of hidden pockets, and she checked them carefully as she did every morning to make certain all her powders were in place. Powders to turn fire green or blue or silver, powders to make a flame roar and hiss and leap up higher than a man is tall, powders to make smoke. A smoke for truth, a smoke for lust, a smoke for fear, and the thick black smoke that could kill a man outright. The red priestess armed herself with a pinch of each of them.

The carved chest that she had brought across the narrow sea was more than three-quarters empty now. And while Melisandre had the knowledge to make more powders, she lacked many rare ingredients. My spells should suffice. She was stronger at the Wall, stronger even than in Asshai. Her every word and gesture was more potent, and she could do things that she had never done before. Such shadows as I bring forth here will be terrible, and no creature of the dark will stand before them. With such sorceries at her command, she should soon have no more need of the feeble tricks of alchemists and pyromancers.

She clearly has a mix of real power and fake tricks.

Then I guess I don't know the angle of killing the princess. I know Val disliked the princess because of grayscale but the only thing I could think of is Mel wants to leave Stannis with no heir and then have him father an heir with her.

If she has a son with Stannis (a legitimate son in wedlock), by laws of primogeniture that son would immediately become his heir before Shireen. The only reason to kill off Shireen would be to force Stannis' hand if he doesn't want more children. Otherwise killing Shireen would be very premature, if that was indeed her plot.
