Yeah the whole scene looks fantastic even if the action was pretty simplistic.

I'm gonna swing at your sword! Now I'm going to swing back at your sword!

Other than the stupid dagger girl in the fight two episodes ago all fights the last few seasons were good. The Hound and Brienne for instance was a great fight.

Let us also mention the fight at The Wall. "The Raid" of Game of Thrones episodes.

The fight at shore when Jamie and Bron arrived in Dorne was not that good.

Grayworm and Barristan fight versus Sons of the Harpy was not a worthy death for Barristan.

The whole Tyrion and Jorah versus the Stonemen fight was almost as bad garden fight saved simply by a much better set up.

It really is crazy how bad the sword fights/action is in this show. That combined with the massive reduction of screen time for the dragons/wolves it almost feels like they're completely removing all budget from it.

The series isn't super high magic/fantasy but they really have stripped most of of it out of the show. There has been almost 0 Warging even though in the books pretty much every stark except sansa does it, etc.

Yeah we talked about this earlier when hbo renegotiated contracts starting season 5 in order to get 7 seasons, because hbo foolishly only signed the principal actors to 6 season deals.
So yeah season 5 was made with just about the same budget as previous seasons even though actor salaries went from 100-150k per episode to 1-1.5m per episode. It's a tiered contact structure but all in all salaries went from like 5% of the 60mil/season to well over 40%.

Assuming season 5 performs well, hbonow isn't an absolute disaster financially (lol apple exclusive), etc then hopefully subsequent seasons will have more money for set, production values, cgi, etc.

a bit back i linked a behind the scenes viper vs. mountain (which come on, is the best fight scene), these are the stunt guys
Paul Herbert ... stunt coordinator (30 episodes, 2012-2014)
C.C. Smiff ... swordmaster / stunt performer (30 episodes, 2012-2014)

they're not back for s5, it seems this guy
Rowley Irlam ... stunt coordinator (10 episodes, 2015)

is the s5 stunt guy, his pedigree is cap merica/thor/casino royale

imo s5 has a shitty stunt guy.

as I remember casino royale had some pretty decent stunts/fight choreography.

Additionally speculating, but I don't think the High Sparrow would be the type to name some random Knight he thinks will win in a Trial by Combat. Wouldn't he name someone important to the Faith somehow? Or are all knights by default champions of the faith?

it could be the stunt guy is good at fistfight scenes and splosions and such, he may not be a specialized sword fighting person, before they shit the budget bed they had 2 guys, one a stunt guy and the other a dedicated sword guy. now they put the load of two people onto one man and he may not be qualified for the sword aspect. looks like he watched a few scenes from some old sword fighting centric movies that didnt age well and just went with it because it worked in those films. the swordsmanship isnt really bad bad, its just not up to par with what we used to have in previous seasons. if i could live with terrible fight animations in everquest for 6 years as a shaman, ranger, monk and a shadowknight, i am sure as hell not going to nerd rage over some basic slash, thrust, parry and block moves this season.

i will bet the guy they got now will be gone by next season because the pressure on delivering what 2 experts were able to do fell short and he took a lot of unwarranted shit over it.

My understanding is the show is shot simultaneously by two separate crews one in Croatia and another one in Scotland.

That maybe the problem because one guys trying to be in two places at once. I really don't have any complaints about any of the action scenes from the Scotland team. All the problem scenes seem to come from the Croatian team. I can see why prior to this season the show had two people doing this job.

*It's Northern Ireland not Scotland.

I just realised, everyone thinks that Jamie has been merged with Aerys Oakheart... but what if it's Bronn instead? Sandsnakes will seduce him (orgy please), escape, kidnap Myrcella then Areo Hotah is going to lop his head off.

The sandsnake boob scene made me think the same, too. Bronn will end up = Aerys and be key in kidnapping Myrcella. I don't think he would be cool with killing Myrcella, though, which makes me think he will end up getting killed ;(
